Well, it's for sure that with the Vatican being vacent, I'm not sure, brethren. It might get to the point where the Byzantine Catholic Divine Liturgies might start sounding like Orthodox Divine Liturgies until we know who our next Pope is going to be. Not going to be easy to omit that "Pope of Rome" part of the Litanies, Great Entrance, and Anaphora, but until we do have a new Pope, and with a resignation, not sure what we're going to do the next few weeks heading into Great and Holy Week and Pascha.

I always thought you were obligated to attend an in-communion Catholic Church if possible, regardless of what rite/church that is, and another EC said that one would have to attend a Roman Mass if that was the only one available. Is there a reference/source on that or would I simple need to speak to a clergy member to get that from a church source?

On an Orthodox forum on which I participate, a "spirited", if disjointed discussion is ongoing on the subject of "Sunday Obligation." This ties into the last few posts. I am interested in two things: (1) What is the popular understanding of a Sunday obligation among Eastern Catholic laity and (2) does the popular understanding differ from current Eastern Catholic official teachings. Thanks and sorry for the digression.

You don't commemorate retired hierarchs. You are correct Stuart. It really struck me this week that things get out of sync when we skip a commemoration in the Ektene. You know how we alternate tones in the Litany of Peace..... low, then high, etc. It was not rhythmic today.

Noticed this last night after all... And you're right. It's gonna be interesting throughout much of the rest of the Great Fast season in terms of how things are going to work... I'm sure Metropolitan William Skurla would have worked things out by now, but...Pope Benedict XVI being newly retired, it would have taken more time than that for the Metropolita of Pittsburgh to do something.
