Time to pray. There has been so much to be thankful for from an Eastern point of view.

here is the text now available Article from Vatican Radio [ en.radiovaticana.va] Dear Brothers, I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonizations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in todays world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is. ..........

I don't know what to think. This hasn't happen in 600 years. From what I understand the Pope that resigned 600 years ago resigned to end a schism.

The time has come for an Eastern Catholic to be elected Pope! Don't bother to make odds on it, besides the fact that I strongly suspect that the vast majority of we Eastern and Oriental Catholics - and our Orthodox brothers and sisters - would just as soon that the chief bishop of the Latin Church be a Latin. Many years, Neil
"One day all our ethnic traits ... will have disappeared. Time itself is seeing to this. And so we can not think of our communities as ethnic parishes, ... unless we wish to assure the death of our community."

The time has come for an Eastern Catholic to be elected Pope! That would be wonderful. However, is there any Eastern Bishop, who is cardinal, who is under 70 years old? It would be nice if our next pope was a bit younger, so that he would be around for a while.

I am concerned about the concept of a Pope resigning.

It would be nice if our next pope was a bit younger, so that he would be around for a while. The Major Archbishops of the Syro-Malabar and the Syro-Malankara Catholic Churches are under 70 years old. The Maronite Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros al Rahi is a little over 70 years old, but he looks younger.

I am concerned about the concept of a Pope resigning. Perhaps 'retiring' would have been a better term?

Chief Rabbi of Rome:
Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks Comments on Pope's Decision To Resign:
"I was honoured to welcome Pope Benedict XVI to Britain on behalf of non-Christian faiths in 2010 and spend time with him during a visit to the Vatican in 2011. I saw him to be a man of gentleness, of quiet and of calm, a deeply thoughtful and compassionate individual who carried with him an aura of grace and wisdom. I wish him good health, blessings and best wishes for the future."

I wish Pope Benedict peace and blessings as he makes this difficult (and very rare!) decision to depart from the See of Rome.
While I myself am Orthodox and naturally take issue with numerous aspects of Roman Catholic theology and practice, I nevertheless pray that whoever succeeds to the Papacy this spring will be a good shepherd for all Roman Catholic believers.

During the vacancy following the death of John Paul II this Lutheran offered public prayers for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, especially during the conclave.
The departure of this German pontiff, well versed (and respectful) of Lutheranism is very ill-timed as we draw close to AD 2017, the 500th anniversary of the posting of the 95 Theses.

Bratja vo Christu (Brethren in Christ)! I just saw this on the news this morning before heading to work, and even though it was understandable that he was up there in age, and felt that he couldn't lead us anymore, I was also shocked at the timing of this decision, coming right at the beginning of the Great Fast like this. Now we have to go through much of the fasting season looking for a new Pontiff, which is not an easy process. I'm sure that there will be announcements from various Eparchies and Dioceses in the world of this, and how we should sustain ourselves, and how to move forward as a Church during this time. It's up to the various Patriarchs, Metropolitan Archbishops, Bishops, Cardinals, and all the celibate clergy to do their part in terms of making sure that we don't collapse under our own weight because of this. Let's hope we have a new Pontiff before the Pascha/Easter season comes about. The time has come for an Eastern Catholic to be elected Pope! Well, I'm sure Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk would deserve a promotion. After all, he's right about the same age as Pope John Paul II was when he was elected, iirc. Can't really remember now. After all, I'm not sure if Patriarch would be the UGCC equivalent of a Cardinal or not, when it comes to Eastern vs. Latin ranks. Good question there.
