I'm exploring labeling issues in the context of a predominantly Roman Catholic website and the impact it has on involvement. I am looking for a sample population and hope you can assist.

1. As Eastern Catholics, have you ever had an issue with people being confused by your posts because you are Eastern rather than Western/Roman? (Y/N)

2. Would being labeled an Eastern Christian rather than labeled general (dominantly Roman Catholic) user have any impact on your interest/participation in such a site? (Y/N)
Confused people from you not being Roman

As an observation, a number of members here - both Catholic and Orthodox - have participated (and some still do) on predominantly Latin Catholic sites, one in particular.

While most initially looked on it as a positive experience which would afford them an opportunity to educate Latins about our Churches, traditions, spirituality, praxis, etc, a fair number came away - or were sent away - with a definite sense that there was little interest in really learning about or actually understanding Eastern and Oriental Christianity. In my own experience, that large numbers of the actively participating Eastern and Oriental Catholics most, or at least very often, closely identified with their Orthodox brethren made a majority of the (often very traditionalist) Latin participants extremely uncomfortable and served to solidify their suspicions that we were somehow 'less Catholic' than them.

It also, not infrequently, did little to endear us to those who operate such Latin fora. It has, however, done nicely for the membership of this site - very much a pan-Eastern/Oriental one, embracing both EC/OC and EO/OO, as well as Latins and others with an interest in and love for the East - as well as for OC.net, an Orthodox forum.

The membership rolls of both have bolstered by those who've either fled or been driven from such Latin sites and who find that, while perhaps parochial, participating with like-minded folk is much less stressful and more conducive to one's spiritual well-being than proving ourselves to those who are dubious of our 'o'rthodoxy.

Many years,

Neil
