If you notice, the vestments are red, indicating his actual rank. Pictures of JPII show the same thing, as do pictures of preceding Popes. I took this information from a book about Roman Catholic insignia for clergy, bishops, cardinals, etc.

Popes are always buried in red vestments (as opposed to purple) because, traditionally, red and white were the only two colors for papal vestments, red being used for Pentecost, and for feasts of Apostles and martyrs, of course, but in the pope's case, also for mourning.

Precisely why purple, green, and black were not traditionally used by the popes is unknown to me. My understanding is that the other liturgical colors were once employed but at some point were reduced to red and white. Only after Vatican II were the other liturgical colors adopted again by the popes.

I'm hoping and praying they select Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin. God will surely guide them to make a proper decision.

The Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, selected John Paul II to lead the Church during an era of Communist dominion over much of the world. He was a son of Poland, a land occupied by the Communists. Ireland is Ground Zero of the sexual abuse crisis and the subsequent loss of Catholic Faith in the West.

The situation of the faith in Ireland is horrific; if the Church can't save Ireland, it can't save the world. Catholic Faith is collapsing in "the most Catholic country in the world." The sex abuse crisis far outweighs the tumult of the scandal of the indulgences and the Protestant Reformation, IMHO.

Red was the traditional color for the pope due to the shedding of blood by Sts. Peter and Paul. White became the color of the pope because St. Pius V refused to take off his Dominican Habit!

I'm not sure how facetious the first part is, but only the current president is so addressed. Former presidents are addressed by the title of their next highest office.

The thing that’s troubling about attributing the practice of the Pope wearing a white cassock to Pius V is that there are so many contemporary portraits of earlier popes wearing white cassocks....In conclusion, the practice definitely predates Pius V, but how far back it goes and why it started is still somewhat mysterious.
