Yes it seems they don't have up to date statistics, I myself have met many Venezuelan Christians of Middle Eastern origin but up to this day I have no idea how many of them are Melkite or Maronite to get a clear idea. I also believe many of them have become Latin Catholics through marriage or lack of an eastern Hierarchy.

"Jvrins,

Welcome to the forum. As Bob already observed, your command of English is excellent."

Thanks Neil.

Not to mention that Pope Francis is from South America, coincidentally. So that's something to look forward to.

I was thinking this very same thing once I learned about the election. At least the new pope will be familiar with the pastoral needs of the Melkites in his native country.

Yes, and with other Eastern Catholics there, too. The UGCC is at least as big in South America as the Melkite Church, and I'm sure that might change things up there, too.

Well, to round out the numbers and satisfy curiousity:

The UGCC reports 170,000 in its Brazilian Eparchy and 165,000 in its Argentinean Eparchy.

The Maronites claim 700,000 in their Brazilian Eparchy and 163,000 in their Mexican Eparchy. There is reportedly also a Maronite presence in Ecuador, albeit no jurisdiction.

The Syriacs report 5,100 in their Venezuelan Exarchate.

The Armenians state that there are 16,000 in their Argentinian Eparchy and 12,000 in their Latin American & Mexican Exarchate (jointly headquartered in Brazil and Uruguay).

There is also a Russian Byzantine presence in Brazil and Argentina and a single Ruthenian temple in Mexico (forgive the unfinished look to the entry, we're in the midst of a software change to the directory).

Both Brazil and Argentina have Ordinariates for Faithful of the Eastern Rites without a hierarchy in their nations.

Many years,

Neil

Yeah, probably no Ruthenians down there, I bet. Seems like outside of Europe, I think that here in North America, we are the only other part of the world that the Ruthenian tradition is known...sad. frown
