OK, perhaps mine was a rush to judgment. I am sensitive to social propriety...I'll blame it on the cotillion classes. wink

Was this snide comment aimed at the Russian Orthodox Church, which was kind enough to give as a gift the icon that ended up being presented to Pope Benedict, really necessary?

a few minutes ago I received an unexpected email from Metropolitan Hilarion, 46, an old friend who is also the “Foreign Minister” (the term isn’t quite accurate, but it suggests the importance of his work and position) of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Moscow Patriarchate, so, the right-hand of Patriarch Kirill. He wrote:

“Pope Francis presented to Pope emeritus Benedict the icon which had been presented to Pope Francis by Metropolitan Hilarion on behalf of Patriarch Kirill [the head of the Russian Orthodox Church] after the private audience [with the new Pope] on 20 March. Отправлено с iPhone [Sent from iPhone]“

So the icon was the Russian icon Hilarion gave to Francis three days ago!

I wrote back: “Amazing. Are you pleased, or upset?”

I added: “It is reported here: ‘They spent 45 minutes talking alone. Pope Francis gave Pope Benedict an icon of Our Lady of Humility, saying that when he received it, he immediately thought of giving it to Pope Benedict.’”

Hilarion wrote back: “Very pleased and touched.”

Hopefully, that settles that.

Btw, wouldn't this be the first act of their new pope to their pope emeritus?

So it is very probable that the "he" that "told me that this icon is named.." was Metropolitan Hilarion.

It is not a regift (in such a case the origin would be not mentioned), but the gift of the most precious think the Pope received.

you mean the Baptists and Evangelicals?

Pat. Alexis II of blessed memory sought forgiveness for compromises with the Soviet regime years ago.

The official website of the Department for External Church Relations of the ROC has a post about the giving of the icon to His Holiness Benedict XVI: https://mospat.ru/en/2013/03/23/news82847/

Quote
On 23 March 2013, Pope Francis of Rome met with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in Castel Gandolfo, papal summer residence. It was for the first time that after his election and enthronement the Pope of Rome visited his retired predecessor.
After a short prayer, Pope Francis handed over to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI an icon of the Mother of God, called ‘Look Down with Favour on My Lowliness’, which was presented to him in the end of private audience on March 20 by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations, on behalf of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. Metropolitan Hilarion said, “the first steps of Your Holiness after the election were marked by lowliness and humility.” Pope Francis replied that he lacked humility and asked for prayers to the Lord to grant it to him.
While giving Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI the icon presented by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, Pope Francis said: I was told that this icon is called ‘Mother of God of Humility’ and I dare say that I thought of you so humble in your pontificate. “Thank you, such a gift!’ replied Pope Emeritus while taking the icon.
