FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Popcorn and a Movie with the Sisters of St. Basil
On Pentecost Sunday, May 19th, all are invited to attend “Women of Spirit”, a film that tells the untold story of the Sisters of St. Basil the Great. The film will be shown at 12:30 p.m. in the Quinn Room, at Christ the King Passionist Retreat Center. The center is located at 6520 Van Maren Lane, Citrus Heights, CA 95621. Sister Ann Laszok, OSBM, the film’s producer, will be in attendance to answer any questions. Sister Ann is well-known as a film producer, teacher, writer, retreat presenter and consultant.
Over 100 years ago, Bishop Soter Ortynsky, the first Eastern Catholic bishop to come to America, reached out to the Sisters of St. Basil in Yavoriv, Ukraine, to help him serve his congregation of a half a million people. “Women of Spirit” is the remarkable story of the Sisters of St. Basil, who answered that call and came to America to minister to the needs of the faithful. Their struggles and challenges are recounted by many of the older Sisters who personally knew these early pioneers.
Interviews by former students, among whom are bishops, priests, sisters, doctors, lawyers, and teachers, bring this amazing story to life. Archival photos and videos underscore the influence the Sisters had on the Ukrainian Catholic Church in the USA and the world, as well as the crucial role they played in the rebirth of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ukraine. Commentaries by Patriarch Sviatoslav and Patriarch Emeritus Lubomyr of the Ukrainian Catholic Church attest to the impact of the catechetical and academic education of thousands of children through the leadership of the Sisters. Humorous and deeply personal recollections add to the total beauty and warmth of the movie.
Admission is free. For more information about the movie, please call Holy Wisdom Eastern Catholic Parish, (916) 482-8423 or go to
