This was mentioned in contrast to the Eastern Orthodox who are in open schism.

Actually, both the Eastern Orthodox and the Oriental Orthodox believe that everyone else is in schism from them.

Who knows, they could be right . . .

"Open schism" means that the schism is intentional and (more often than not) recent.

The Catholic Church officially understands the schism between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches to be more a matter of "invincible ignorance" rather than intentionally perpetrated. Orthodox Churches (i.e., officially, as distinct from individual Orthodox Christians) oftentimes do not view the schism with the Catholic Churches in the same way.

There are a few reasons someone might say the Oriental Orthodox are "not in open schism" as distinct from the Eastern Orthodox.

Most Oriental Orthodox Churches (with the exception of the Coptic Orthodox - a relatively recent, and not historical position) accept the Catholic Churches as true Churches with true Sacraments and priesthood.

There are fewer perceived theological differences between Oriental Orthodox and Catholics (particularly Latin Catholics) than between Eastern Orthodox and Catholics (particularly Latin Catholics).

From what I've seen/read, Oriental Orthodox are more open to the reality of different traditions and theological Traditions than the Eastern Orthodox.

I hope that helps.

Blessings,
Marduk

A Roman priest.

Very interesting information, btw.

This is not entirely true, my friend. The Coptic Orthodox Church does not say that the Catholics have valid sacraments or not. I personally was raised in the Coptic Orthodox Church, and we were ALWAYS taught that your sacraments are valid in our catechisms: i.e. the Coptic people are taught its valid, and no doubt that this is a respect that is top-down driven from priests to congregation in our Church.

There maybe some copts who do not think that your sacraments are valid, but as I mentioned, this is not what is being taught.

I think I see what you mean: if you meant that the Coptic Church, until recently, did not view your Church as one with Valid Sacraments, then perhaps that's true. I'm not sure; but officially, it has never said anything against the Catholic Church or her sacraments.

The only thing we regret, as a Church, is the mixing of religion with politics and power, which I think the Catholic Church may think differently.

Agreed. The latin rites are very close to us - even though they view us heretical.
This is a shame, but they are quite close to us. They have this impression that because we are not under the Pope of Rome, we are cursed.

What does "open schism" mean compared to schism? Is there a difference?

Everyone is considered schismatic, by someone else.
Since everyone claims they are the true Church and that other guy over there is the one who left the Holy Church, it's all a matter which particular group you belong to.
So either it has become almost impossible to objectively tell who the real schismatic is, since there are so many in all of those Apostolic Churches (and the implication is that the Holy Spirit really isn't doing all that great of a job of getting people into that One Church among all the other false ones), or the wall of separation is just a flimsy barrier erected by ourselves that we can't see because well all have a planck in our own eye.
