Last week in the Roman lectionary we had 1 Kings 19:19 where Elisha breaks up his plow and uses the wood to make a fire to boil the oxen. The Deacon at the parish we were attending preached. He is a professor at a local medical school. As he described Elisha's efforts "he disarticulated the plow" to boil the oxen. I must admit the image of a disarticulated plow was somewhat different than a broken up plow in my mind.

Your deacon is over-thinking, since an iron age, Middle Eastern scratch plow was essentially just a couple of wooden sticks--no mouldboard, no metal parts, just a draft pole and a pointed stick. Elisha literally could "break up" his plow by snapping it over his knees.

That must have been one big stick if it took 12 yoke of oxen to pull it.

Twelve is a canonical number in the Bible, like seven, eight, forty and seventy. A plow pulled by twelve yoke of oxen would be suitable for Paul Bunyan, who only needs Babe the Big Blue Ox in any case.

12 for the 12 apostles, 12 for the 12 tribes of Israel. There's probably some more 12 symbolisms besides the various places in the Book of Revelation.
BTW, the study of signs and symbols is semiotics, not "symbology", a pet peeve of mine.
