I don't have any way of knowing the days it's required, the seasons on our calendar, or when we don't fast on Wed and Fri. Is that last one when it's a feast? What feasts?

Dear Stuart,

Years ago, I asked the question here about how one could describe the fasting of the Latin Church.

Your response was "... lax?"

I still laugh about it - and I do hope the Administrator awarded you with something for that great response!

HeavenlyBlack, I tend to look at abbamoses.com. Some Ruthenian parishes will have it on their online calendar, bulletins. I know my parish had stated what is prescribed in the Typikon, then what's prescribed by the church. I tend to also look at Our Lady of Fatima Byzantine, in San Francisco, who has a liturgical calendar, denoting fast days, and non fast days.

Don't follow the minima laid out by the Ruthenian Church, and don't mindlessly plunge into the fullness of the Byzantine fasting regulations, but rather speak with your spiritual father and prayerfully what fasting rules are proper for you, given your present state of spiritual development.

Just to be clear, Our Lady Of Fatima is a Russian Greek/Byzantine-Rite Church. We are not a Byzantine Catholic/Ruthenian parish. smile So our Liturgical calendar often does not match the Ruthenian Church calendar. We're on the Revised Julian Calendar which puts us on a different calendar from most (all?) Byzantine Catholic Church parishes for a large part of the year.

Our Website does show the basics for our fasting. Also, if you go to our Facebook [facebook.com] "events" you can see a bit more on the Dormition Fast there, intended to put the abstinence part into a fuller context.

Agreed with Stuart, to speak with a qualified spiritual father before embarking on fasting.

Praise God, the "edit" function is back!
