Are there any Melkite, Ukrainian or Romanian parishes in or near San Diego? I can't figure that out from the parish directory.

There are three Byzantine Catholic Parishes in San Diego:

1.) Holy Angels Byzantine Catholic Church [holyangelssandiego.com] My home parish. D.L. at 9am

2.) St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church [stjohnthebaptizer.org] The priest is the godfather of my son. D.L. is at 9.30am

3.) A Melkite Mission that meets at Holy Angels on Sundays at noon, I believe.

If you do, please say hello to Fr. James and his wife for me. (I'm actually seeing him this Sunday for dinner, as we live very close) Also, please do come to Holy Angels if you have a chance, we are a very orthodox parish with a wonderful pastor and very active liturgical schedule.

The Melkites no longer have an active website, that I am aware of. Here is the information from the Eparchy of Newtons site: St. Jacob Melkite Community [melkite.org]

Thank you. I really like the 12 noon time for the Melkite Liturgy.

Thanks also for the invite to Holy Angels. I hope you're happy there but I stay away from Ruthenians. They are far too politically correct with the Liturgy.

Check the time of the Liturgy at St Jacob's (714-600-3660). It was previously 11:00am - I can't be sure whether the eparchial info is current.

Many years,

Neil

Hi Neil,

The Melkite Liturgy is at noon now, due to the lack of a permanent Melkite priest in San Diego. I believe, Fr. James Babcock is now the pastor (and also is responsible for another Melkite mission in Southern California)and he comes down to San Diego from time to time. The times he doesn't come either Fr. Robert of Holy Angels or Fr. James of St. John the Baptist fill in during the Melkite liturgy.

Glory to Jesus Christ!

The majority of the time the priest serving the Melkites in San Diego is our Ruthenian priest. So this whole dichotomy of Ruthenians as PC vs. the rest of the Byzantine Catholic world as not PC is simply not true, practically speaking. That, and the fact that we have celebrations between our Byzantine Catholic parishes in the San Diego area, underscores that a dichotomy is neither helpful nor accurate. We are Eastern Catholics together. smile

And as mentioned above, their liturgy is at noon, here is a link to the mission: https://melkite.org/?sm-location=st-jacob-melkite-mission.

In XC,
JAD

Nelson and j.a.,

Thanks to both of you for confirming that info.
