It would disturb Father John's soul, though, if I pointed out that most modern Greeks are actually an admixture of Slavs and Turks, through whose veins the blood of Pericles flows very thin indeed.

As long as the tongue of Pericles is thick in their mouth, it matters not. Btw, besides the Karamanlis (and it doesn't seem to matter, as the attained the premiership and presidency of the Hellenic Republic), not much Turk blood in there.

When I was a boy what are now autonomous ritual Churches did not exist. They were simply part of the Roman Catholic Church and referred to as "Roman Catholics of the Melkite rite" and "Roman Catholics of the Greek rite"... etc.

The Code of Canon Law refers to “Autonomous Ritual Churches.” E.g., Canon 112. I believe this is just a translation issue: sometimes "sui iuris" is translated as "autonomous"; sometimes it is left as "sui iuris".

Words and phrases have meanings. Why use "sui juris" in the first place if it is not analogous to its commonly understood meaning? "SUI JURIS. One who has all the rights to which a freemen is entitled; one who is not under the power of another, as a slave, a minor, and the like." http://legal-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Sui+jurisOr, if you don't like that definition, there is always this one: "sui ju·ris adj.(Law) Capable of managing one's own affairs" http://www.thefreedictionary.com/sui+jurisWe Orthodox view Rome's unique definition as a potent symbol to us that attempting to reach a joint and mutually agreed upon definition of other Latin terms, say like " primus inter pares" is not likely going to happen any time soon. Word do have meanings - and consequences.
