http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-25102720Can someone tell me what this means? Does it mean he thinks that the Vatican, or even himself as Pope, has too much power? Do you think he could be open to the idea of being one church with many patriarchs (orthodox and catholic) governing the entire Body of the Church?

Vatican 1 (incomplete), Vatican 2, and subsequent Popes have said the same. Let's see what actions are taken to strengthen the power of the Eastern Patriarch and Catholicoi. There are already many who have authority of their own autonomous Church, but not the entire Communion of Churches.

Here is the section that Eastern Christians will be most interested in: The scope and limits of this Exhortation 16. I was happy to take up the request of the Fathers of the Synod to write this Exhortation.19 In so doing, I am reaping the rich fruits of the Synod’s labours. In addition, I have sought advice from a number of people and I intend to express my own concerns about this particular chapter of the Church’s work of evangelization. Countless issues involving evangelization today might be discussed here, but I have chosen not to explore these many questions which call for further reflection and study. Nor do I believe that the papal magisterium should be expected to offer a definitive or complete word on every question which affects the Church and the world. It is not advisable for the Pope to take the place of local Bishops in the discernment of every issue which arises in their territory. In this sense, I am conscious of the need to promote a sound “decentralization”. (Emphasis mine)

Outstanding! I wonder if this is the beginning of the demise of ultramontanism?

Outstanding! I wonder if this is the beginning of the demise of ultramontanism? It is, if the local bishops would develop a little chutzpah. They've been too toady for too long. It's not always Rome's fault. Nature abhors a vacuum, as they say.

Outstanding! I wonder if this is the beginning of the demise of ultramontanism? I'm optimistic that it started some time ago.
