Reuters now reports that the nuns appeared in a video broadcast on Al-Jazeera and state that they are safe

It is very unlikely that the nuns left the monastery of their own free will, especially given that their kidnappers immediately made demands for negotiating their release. Many commenter have noted that the nuns are not wearing the crosses that they normally wear, which is a very alarming sign-- the group that kidnapped them also removed all the crosses from the churches in Maaloula. Even more tellingly, one of the nuns starts to use the word "release" (in Arabic "ifraj", a word you only use in kidnapping contexts, before she is interrupted by her captor.

In general, al-Jazeera, which is owned by the Qatari government, functions as a propaganda outlet for the rebels in Syria. For an overview of what the Lebanese press, across the ideological spectrum, is saying about Maaloula, take a look at:
