Jack,

Thank you for uploading them on your YouTube page.

I have two questions about something I saw - it appears there are some bishops with Latin miters wearing the Byzantine epitrachelion and phelonion. I've never seen that before...

Also, who were the three clerics in purple mozetta and biretta in the front on the left? I've not seen that before.

What's the story?

Fr. Jon

As far as I know about Latins: Purple mozetta/biretta are bishops, not archbishops or cardinals

The others may have been the Syro-Malabar bishop of the Eparchy of St. Thomas in Chicago, and the Chaldean/Maronite bishops.

Those would be the Maronite bishops. The Maronites, Syriacs, Chaldeans, and Syro-Malabars have all adopted the Latin style mitre, although the Syro-Malabars have a unique heart shaped top to them.

Latin bishops/archbishop have purple choir vesture.

They definitely were not Maronite bishops, and these guys in purple mozetta with black biretta were not bishops or archbishops.

These guys with the Latin miters and epitrachalia were absolutely not Maronites.

Where there some sort of canons present at the Liturgy? That may explain the purple mozetta, but they had black birettas.

Ok now I see them. I would guess canons or abbots for the former and Latin bishops wearing Byzantine vestments for the latter.

Fr Jon, sorry, I'm no real expert on clerical garb, and even though I was there, I didn't meet everyone nor have the time to find who was who since I was manning five cameras singlehandedly!

From the program we received, I do know there were non-Byzantine but Eastern bishops in the procession. There might have been some Western hierarchs (or other senior clerics of some import)sitting up front who were not fully vested, but "borrowed" Byzantine stoles (epitrachilions) to receive communion. And I think I heard there was some high-ranking person of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre wearing dress of the order. I really don't know for sure. Glad you liked the footage.

Jack
