Except for the bit about Leninism (I would say Russia is far more fascist than communist, but the term "National Bolshevism" seems an apt description), it's pretty accurate. The veneer of Christianity is awfully thin, and for most people, Orthodoxy is a lifestyle accessory.

Dear Recluse,

I meant, primarily, the Kremlin or Russia's current leadership and the national culture it espouses.

As for what is charitable and uncharitable - you seem to want to pass judgement from above in such a manner rather than avoid discussion when you don't agree with the conclusions.

Dear Stuart,

Yes, "Leninist" in the "bad" sense. Leninism has never been repudiated as an "integral part" of Russia's history by the Kremlin and its culture (note how it was worked in as such at Sochi).

Leninism saw morality and democracy as bourgeois phenomena of the West and this continues to be the Kremlin's approach.

Your description of "National Bolshevism" is one I've not heard before and I think it is a brilliant and insightful definition on your part, sir.

Nah. I am not the one passing judgment. I would never refer to an entire country (especially Russia) as Godless.

But you will live with your own conscience.

I just think it was an awful thing to say....especially during the Great Fast.

Recluse,

I don't think anyone's saying the entire country is Godless.

Alex,

Please be more careful when making statements that might be seen as uncharitable.

Peace,
Deacon Richard

Dear Father Deacon,

OK - but I meant the Russian state (and the Kremlin), not all Russians.

Some of my best friends are Russian . . .

No, you just referred to a group of several entire countries as Godless. But you live with your own conscience...

You are correct about one thing for sure...I must certainly live with my conscience....and it is not always easy. I had a difficult past. Thank God for confession.
