At North America's showplace of high-church, pure-rite Ukrainian Catholicism. Very sorry to hear that.

Yes, there is nothing left. This is the big drawback to building traditional wooden churches, they go up like a box of matches in a fire.

Really? "Pure-rite"? Only a "High Church" Latin Cathic would phrase this loss as you did. I have to take offense with your tone deafness.

St. Elias parish community is one of the great repositories of an authentic Eastern Orthodox prayer and liturgical life in North America. In all honestly, many of our Orthodox communities here, including my own, and regardless of our jurisdiction, would be blessed to experience a similar spiritual life.

Their loss is shared by ALL true believing Eastern Christians - be they in communion with the Orthodox OR the Church of Rome.

I have no doubt that the words of the Troparion of the Great Day, the "Velik Den" will resonate as never before the hearts of St . Elias family in two weeks as they reply: Christ is Risen!

" Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered; let those who hate Him flee from before His face

As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish; as wax melts before the fire

So the sinners will perish before the face of God; but let the righteous be glad

This is the day which the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. "

As one who watched the church of childhood and youth go up in flames I know the pain and heartache all too well.

But,as DMD has posted so well, the Paschal proclamation will endure.

My wife and I too watched her childhood church and my parents' first parish where my brothers were baptized as well in South Buffalo be consumed by fire on a frigid March morning in 1982. It is like losing a parent or close loved one.

This is incredibly sad. I trust, however, that the church will be rebuilt. How can we all contribute?

Lord, have mercy!

Learn how to take a compliment. Sheesh! I meant that although I defend moderate traditional latinizations, that doesn't mean I don't respect the form of the rite that St. Elias represents so well. This 2x4 on your shoulder, seeming to say a conservative Latin Catholic can't get anything right, makes your tradition look bad, certainly not what you want nor what I believe. But this perpetual victim schtick gets old.

Anyway, accept that earlier comment in the spirit it was given. This event is not about you or me but as you say, a catastrophic loss for the whole church. At least the true treasure of the church, the people, are unhurt. Condolences to the parishioners.

Keep visiting the parish website: http://www.saintelias.com/ca/home/

I'm sure in time there will be an announcement of how one can contribute to the building of a new church.

Addendum:

Just saw this:

Quote
Cheques to help the parish rebuild can be made payable to "St. Elias" and mailed to 10193 Heritage Rd., Brampton, ON, L7A 0A1. Online contributions will be set up in the coming days.
