Thankfully no one was injured. I hope the Church had a good insurance plan, because that will help them to begin the process of rebuilding. May God bless all the members of the parish as they start the hard work of restoring their spiritual home.

Lord have mercy! It is a tragic loss, but thank God none of the people were hurt. St Elias parish will endure, rebuild and come out stronger.

The main page of the St. Elias parish website now has information on how to donate online for the rebuilding and also to be put on their mailing list for updates (scroll towards the bottom): http://www.saintelias.com/ca/home/

At North America's showplace of high-church, pure-rite Ukrainian Catholicism. Very sorry to hear that. Really? "Pure-rite"? Only a "High Church" Latin Catholic would phrase this loss as you did. I have to take offense with your tone deafness. St. Elias parish community is one of the great repositories of an authentic Eastern Orthodox prayer and liturgical life in North America. In all honestly, many of our Orthodox communities here, including my own, and regardless of our jurisdiction, would be blessed to experience a similar spiritual life. Their loss is shared by ALL true believing Eastern Christians - be they in communion with the Orthodox OR the Church of Rome. I have no doubt that the words of the Troparion of the Great Day, the "Velik Den" will resonate as never before the hearts of St. Elias family in two weeks as they reply: Christ is Risen! "Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered; let those who hate Him flee from before His face As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish; as wax melts before the fire So the sinners will perish before the face of God; but let the righteous be glad This is the day which the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." Learn how to take a compliment. Sheesh! I meant that although I defend moderate traditional latinizations, that doesn't mean I don't respect the form of the rite that St. Elias represents so well. This 2x4 on your shoulder, seeming to say a conservative Latin Catholic can't get anything right, makes your tradition look bad, certainly not what you want nor what I believe. But this perpetual victim schtick gets old. Anyway, accept that earlier comment in the spirit it was given. This event is not about you or me but as you say, a catastrophic loss for the whole church. At least the true treasure of the church, the people, are unhurt. Condolences to the parishioners. Fogey, With respect, think about the terms you are using. By implication if one parish uses the pure Rite, others must be using an impure Rite. And I don't think that's what you meant.

An impure Rite during Lent?!
They could have at least waited until after the Sunday of All Saints for that . . .

My home church--United Methodist--was gutted during a "polar vortex" outbreak in the late 1970's.
Ice from the fire hoses encased the altar and Baptismal font in ice. Those two items--and only those two items--were able to be used the following Sunday when worship was held in the social hall.

Dear Friends,
At some point during the conflagration, a fireman completely suited up, went into the burning building, and managed to pull out the sacrament, the antimension, and two gospel books.
The only other things that were saved had been taken out previously or were out being restored.
Please pray for our Saint Elias Parish Community.

May God protect and richly bless the firefighter who took that risk and may God grant him many years. Prayers continue for the faithful and clergy of St Elias. Many years, Neil
