Recently, I was cleaning out some of my old newspaper clippings and came across this LOS ANGELES TIMES article from July 30, 2000. It interested me then and now. Strictly speaking, the Fyodorovtsy described in it are not an Old Believer community. However, like other so-called 'eretiki' (heretics), they reject the Russian Orthodox Church and the sacraments, especially marriage. Because they are forbidden to marry or proselytize, they risk extinction.

Do the Fyodorovtsy still exist? According to this KESTON NEWSLETTER (Number 13, 2011, page 27), just over a hundred survive.

Tom,

They didn't sound familiar to me and checking those resource threads that I created a couple of years back confirms that I didn't list them among the eretiki of which I was aware. So, it's unlikely that they're mentioned in any of my reference materials. I'll do some searching in items that I've picked up since then and see if I can find any data on them.

As you've said, the proscriptions against marriage and proselytizing don't bode well for their long-time survival. They may well have gone the way of the Shakers and some of the utopian and apocalyptic sects but been little-noticed in doing so. I'll post what, if anything, I learn. (I'll also excerpt a bit from what you've provided and add them to the earlier resource listing thread.)

Many years,

Neil
