In the Divine Liturgy we pray for the Ecumenical Patriarch Pope John Paul II. Who do we pray for when the Pope dies and a new Pope has not been elected yet?

What happens between Popes?

Dear Father Kenneth, CHRIST IS RISEN! In former times, this commemoration was made after the death of a pope: "For the widowed See of Rome.."---this is no longer the case??? confused

In the Risen Lord,
+Fr. Gregory

+Father Archimandrite Gregory, who asks for your holy prayers!

My speculation is based upon what had been done in the past after the deaths of +Metropolitan Thomas and +Metropolitan Judson.

In each case, the petitions were omitted, since there was no one named for quite some time.

Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

Father Gregory,

Father Deacon Kenneth is correct. The commemoration of the Holy Father in the litanies, etc, is a commemoration of the living person who occupies the See of Rome. Sees are not commemorated as a living person. So when a see is vacant either through death, retirement, etc., no commemeration is made.

Hope this makes sense.
