OK, you are right.
Does it still hold true that the Catholics of Quebec normally take "Joseph" as a second name, if a boy, and "Marie" as a second name, if a girl? (Speaking of "secondary . . ").
Alex
French-Canadian Roman Catholics use the name 'Joseph' (for a boy) or 'Marie' (Mary) for a girl as the FIRST name in the baptismal name of a child as a long-standing tradition since fairly early in the early French colonies as a sign of reverence, in dedication to them [St Joseph and the Virgin Mary], and to 'devote' the child to them by the use of their name to invoke protection of the child their life entire and as a 'standard norm' of Roman Catholics' practice in an expression of faith. Today, it is still widely used but it is not as 'imposed' as it used to be or something one 'must' do while before it was practically a near 'obligation' which the clergy encouraged people to do. It was not seen 'well' if you did not do this while today you can dispense from doing so. I did not use this in the names of my own children simply as a testimony that I trust in Our Lord that He will protect my children despite this - it is my way to put my trust blindly and entirely in Him in this manner by NOT doing this that He WILL protect them if you can understand what I mean. . .
Best,
Christine
