Glorify Him!

May the limitless, unconditional and never-ending love of “the newborn Child, the God before time", fill the cave of your soul - - - today and forever!

Today I received word from Ukraine that MANY Ukrainian Catholic parishes have begun celebrating the feast of the Nativity of our Lord, God and Saviour, Jesus Christ according to . . . the new calendar!

It has caught many by surprise. My cousin over there, who is Orthodox, wrote to wish me a Merry Christmas this morning. When I asked her why she was doing this when she knew we were on the Old Calendar - she said that all her UGCC friends are celebrating today. She was under the impression that this was general for the entire UGCC.

I'm going to be sent articles about this. If anyone knows anything further about this issue, I'd be very happy to learn more!

Christ is Born!

Let us Glorify Him!

Alex

Father Serge, of blessed memory, wouldn't be too thrilled about this if he were still with us!

Fortunately, he has gone on to a place of refreshment where these things don't matter.

May his memory be eternal. I miss his presence here.

Dear Alice,

Christ is Born!

Father Sergius, of blessed memory, would indeed be in favour of the Old Calendar.

But he was against the keeping of it if it meant that people would act as he saw a number of people in the UGCC act with respect to it.

He saw that there were those who didn't celebrate the feast of the Nativity of our Lord on the new calendar but then, when it came time to celebrate it on January 7th - they did a perfunctory observance of it because "they had to go to work."

Such an observance of the Old Calendar, he believed (quite correctly) would lead young people to leave the Church altogether.

He even warned one parishioner about this - and his words became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If the UGCC in Ukraine is moving toward the new Calendar - I am very happy. My in-laws, who have always observed the Old Calendar Christmas because they wanted to "be in solidarity with the UGCC in Ukraine) have now affirmed they will move to the new calendar next year - permanently.

And I couldn't be happier! We already mark December 25th in the same way as our Western Christian neighbours do so that it appears we mark Christmas twice with the difference that our young people don't go to church on the 25th of December but then ... don't go on January 7th because of their studies and work responsibilities.

And that is just plain . . . you know what.

Hopefully, with the new calendar Christmas they will be obliged to mark it properly and in Church (since we are all off from work during the last week of the year anyway).

Hopefully, this "double celebration" of Christmas will become a stronger celebration of just one.

Father Sergius would have had nothing against that, I can assure you!
