Can't afford a ticket to Carpatho Rus'? Use Google Maps satellite photos to get a view of your ancestral villages. My maternal grandparents came from what is now the Transcarpathian oblast in Ukraine, in the Northeast section of what is now the Uzhansky Nature Park, just a couple villages from the Polish frontier and a few villages from the Galician line. The villages are merely houses and buildings on either side of a road along a mountain ridge. The image must have been taken in the late afternoon, as the taller buildings cast shadows, one stood out -- the silhouette of a typical tripartite Carpathian wooden church. What a treat!
