Can someone explain why ODE 2 is missing in most Sunday Matins?

It has something to do with Moses and Lent. Maybe passover or something.

If you look at the numbering of ODES

ode 1
ode 3
ode 4
ode 5

etc.

This is a baffling search to make on your own

A penitential Moses Canon - excluded on purpose for the Resurrectional Matins.

When do we sing ODE 2?

Do the biblical ODES coincide with the ODES of Matins and other prayers in the church?

I'm just a dumb Slav but no one ever explains this stuff - everyone just accepts it - and it gets really complicated.

The Odes of the Canon are matched to the Nine Biblical Odes. If Orthros was done in full the Biblical Ode would be chanted and the Irmos and Troparia of the Liturgical Ode are inserted toward the end just like the Stichera are at the end of the Lamplighting Psalms. Ode 2 is missing because the Second Canticle of Moses is not used outside of Great Lent, and even then only on Tuesday, because of its severe character.

You can find more about canons here [metropolitancantorinstitute.org].

Canons with ode 2 appear at in the liturgical books on Wednesdays in Cheesfare Week, the Great Fast and Holy Week, as well as on:

1. Meatfare Saturday (comemoration of all who have died since the beginning of the world);

2. Cheesefare Saturday (when we commemorate all holy monks and nuns);

3. Thursday in the fifth week of the Fast, as part of the Great Canon of Saint Andrew of Crete;

4. On the Saturday before Pentecost (I think) - again, when we remember ALL the departed, not just those who died in the Faith; and

5. At Compline on certain days in the Fast.

NONE of these is on a Sunday. The canticle for Ode 2, the so-called "Song of Warning" of Moses, is just not festal enough for Sundays smile

Can you please tell me where I can find Ode 2 so I can print it out for prayer during Lent. Thanks!
