You can have any icon you want but traditionally even as a minimum Eastern Christians have one of the Theotokos on the left and Christ as teacher or Pantokrator on the right. This symbolizes Christ being born before any of us in historical time, our lives and prayers and salvation occuring in the corner space between the icons and Christ at the end of historical time taking His position in judging every person and all humanity. This is what I heard somewhere once and loved the imgagery.
