I recently acquired the Book of Hours published by Holy Trnsfiguration Monastery. I am curious if anyone else has this small book and has any tips for a Latin to become better acquainted with the midnight office and other offices in the book (3rd, 6th, and 9th Hours and the Typica) and the Byzantine hours in general. Thanks!

Dear Tom,

Perhaps you should Google "The Dynamic Psalter and Horologion" which provides all the daily propers for the various services (scroll down on the right to the "hourly services").

The Troparia and Kontakia are provided where they should be in the services so one doesn't need to fret about what to place where. You can do as much as you like and go on from there.

The Midnight Hour has the fewest variations.

This site uses the texts from the Great Horologion and Psalter from Holy Transfiguration Monastery.

I've been trying to master the Extraordinary Divine Office of the Latin Rite and find it to be much more challenging (it could be that I'm just an idiot . . .). The Divinum Officium site is a great help here.

I will look more at this site. I did stumble on it last night, but I'll go back and compare my Book of Hours to the site's layout of the hour so I can better understand what's going on. If you need help on any of the Divine Office of the Roman rite let me know. I've been at that for a while now.

Thanks Tom!

I love the Latin Divine Office, especially the Benedictine Rite and will take you up on that!

Pax!

Mr. Lyman,

I have a book, "Let Us Pray To The Lord, Vol 1, Daily Office" (1996) published by Eastern Catholic Publications, Fairfax, VA.

It has morning and evening prayers, simplified daily Matins, Vespers and day hours. Also Office of Paraclesus, Akathist to the Theotokos, various other prayers. It is by no means complete, but I find it useful.

It was my good fortune to find the 1962 Roman Breviary (includes Matins) in English at a "free book bin" at the SSPX retreat center in Ridgefield, CT some years ago. I find this Roman breviary an excellent source of daily personal liturgical prayer, especially since now I live 100 miles from the closest Eastern Catholic parish and 125 miles from a SSPX chapel. As I personally cannot stomach the Novus Ordo, I have to make do with a diocesan " Tridentine" Sunday Mass. So, this breviary helps me be connected to authentic liturgy on a daily basis.
