Thank you Theophan, Orthodox Catholic/Alex, and Pani Rose. It is amazing how one short prayer can contain so much!

Does anyone know of a bible study done on the Jesus Prayer?

Which book Way of the Pilgrim or the N.T. Wright's book.

In regards to N.T. Wright's book only read the Trinity Sunday Chapter posted online e.g. link.

In regards to Way of the Pilgrim I read to the point after his legs stop working after the Feast of the Annunciation. Right now do not own many Eastern books besides two copies of the Akathist. That and Byzantine Seminary Prayer booklets. So thank you so much for the link. All I have on the East is fragmentary from various internet quotes. If you know other resources could you please post links.

On a different note My screen name is not related to Way of the Pilgrim(granted I knew of the book). The sign up process confused me and it was not the one intended. Searching comes from Neil Young's song and Pilgrim comes from my enjoyment of pilgrimages.

Yes, "mercy" is much more encompassing that just forgiveness of sins. in the Septuagint, "eleos" translates the Hebrew word "hesed"-steadfast love. This is where we should begin our understanding of "mercy".

I see peace is an interior disposition, where the passions are under control and properly ordered (hence, peace of the world is properly ordered relationships among groups).

In Christ,
Adam

SearchingPilgrim:

Christ is Risen!!

As I've prayed about the meaning of mercy as it is embodied in Christian prayers of many kinds, I've come to understand it as being more than "cut me some slack" as Adam notes.

I also understand it to mean "walk a mile in my shoes," "see the world through my eyes and through the prism of my experience (limited as it may be)," and "be moved with compassion and help me because I am broken, limited, and incomplete (without You)."

God's mercy is so great, like Bob said, a lable can't be place on it. (Maybe that is what I think he's saying smile ) I find so many people pray it so many ways. As my husband was entering eternal life, I saw his lips moving. I knew that move - JESUS MERCY! I really don't think Jesus was saying to him, "sorry it's not good enough". I think God was smiling, " saying well done, my good and faithful servant."

A friend stood on his front steps waiting for an ambulance, as his nephew lay in his arms dying. The entire time, the Jesus Prayer was praying through him. The prayer he had prayed from a child, came in God's mercy, as an eighteen year old stood there helpless. God's mercy!

Isn't that relationship with Jesus and his prayer that one desires? That the love, mercy, and grace becomes so strong, it is praying for us, and through us every moment of our lives.
