The future Bishop José was born in Santa Teresa, Guanajuato, México on August 5, 1923, into a devout Roman Catholic family.
He became dissatisfied with the Roman Catholic Church and in 1950 joined the Mexican National Catholic Church.
He was received into the new Exarchate of Mexico with his clergy and community, he and his priests as priests.

10. Paul (de Ballester-Convallier) of Nazianzus

Bishop Paul was a native of Catalonia, Barcelona, and previously a Franciscan monk. Upon turning to Orthodoxy he studied in seminaries at Athens and Halki. He was ordained in Athens as a Deacon in 1953 and as a Priest in 1954. His ministry as a priest was first in Constantinople (1954-1959) and then in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America (1959-1984). In 1970 he was consecrated titular Bishop of Nazianzus (in New York) with its seat in Mexico.

11. Gabriel (de Vylder) of Komana

Guido de Vylder was born in June 13, 1946 in Lokeren, near Ghent (Belgium), into a Flemish Catholic family.

During this time he became acquainted with the Orthodox Christian parishes in Belgium and the Netherlands which led him to refuse ordination to minor orders in the Roman Catholic Church. In January 1974, he was received into the communion of the Orthodox Church at the Parish of St. Andrew in Ghent.

Archbishop Jakob was born on August 13, 1914 to a Dutch family,
and was baptised into the Roman Catholic Church on August 14.

His Grace Bishop Seraphim was born Joseph Sigrist on December 13th 1941 in New York and baptized in a Presbyterian Church. He was brought up in Pleasantville New York and studied at Nyack College. While studying at Nyack he began to attend the Orthodox Church and on completing his degree there he was received into the Orthodox Church at Holy Virgin Protection Cathedral in New York. He then began study at St Vladimir’s Seminary and graduating in 1967 went to Japan to assist in the of the Orthodox Church in Japan.

His Beatitude, Metropolitan Jonah was born James Paffhausen on October 20, 1959, in Chicago, IL, and was baptized into the Episcopal Church. While still a child, his family later settled in La Jolla, CA, near San Diego. He was received into the Orthodox Church in 1978 at Our Lady of Kazan Moscow Patriarchal Church, San Diego, while a student at the University of California, San Diego. Later, he transferred to UC Santa Cruz, where he was instrumental in establishing an Orthodox Christian Fellowship.

19. Orestes (Chornock) of Agathonikeia, former Byzantine rite Catholic priest

Orestes Chornock was born in 1883 in the Transcarpathia area of central Europe. As his family resided in the area of the Unia, he was raised within the Greek Catholic rite. After his marriage he was ordained into the Greek Catholic priesthood and shortly thereafter emigrated to the United States.

After repeated and unsuccessful appeals to Rome by church congresses held in 1932 and 1934 for recognition of their customs, a congress of the parishes opposing the celibacy rulings was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 23, 1937. This congress severed all relations with the Roman Catholic Church. The congress further nominated Fr. Orestes as its bishop-nominee. After accepting this group of parishes under its wing, the Church of Constantinople accepted the parishes as a diocese and consecrated Fr. Orestes a bishop on September 18, 1938, with the title of Bishop of Agathonikeia and as an auxiliary bishop to the Patriarch of Constantinople.

20. John (Martin) of Nyssa, former Byzantine rite Catholic priest

On May 29, 1955, John was ordained to the Holy Priesthood in the Byzantine Catholic Metropolia of Pittsburgh.
After being received into the Orthodox Church in 1966. Fr. John was elected to the episcopacy on August 15, 1966, and appointed auxiliary bishop to Metr. Orestes, with the title of titular bishop of Nyssa, by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. His consecration was on October 6, 1966, at Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The consecrating bishops were led by Abp. Iakovas, of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America, along with Metr. Orestes and Bishop Theodosios.
