Searcher Junior Member Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 14 Canonsburg, PA	This week the Latin Church celebrated the dedication of St. John Lateran Archbasilica, the Bishop of Rome's Chair. This got me to think. After the college of cardinals elect a man to fill the role of pope, the man who accepts the role of pope then changes his name. Is it common in other Churches to change one's name when he accepts a higher office?

JBenedict Member Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 329 New York, NY	In the Byzantine tradition, one may also receive a new name when one is ordained to minor (reader/subdeacon) or major orders (priest/deacon/bishop) orders.
