O strange and wonderful event!
We were not really put to death,
we were not really buried,
we were not really crucified,
we were not really brought back to life.
But, though the imitation was symbolic,
the salvation is very real!
Christ was truly crucified,
truly buried,
truly raised up.
And all this was given to us by a grace
in order that we might share his sufferings by imitating them,
and thus truly obtain salvation.
How vast God’s love for humanity.
Christ had his utterly pure hands pierced by the nails
he suffered;
and yet it is to me,
who share in his sufferings without suffering or experiencing pain,

Dear Thomas, Christ is Risen! Was this your first or second Orthodox Resurrection service? What are your observations/feelings about it? Hope you are enjoying being off the fast today!  It does get very challenging by the beginning of Holy Week! Slowly, after a few of fasting during all fast days, meat tends to become less and less desirable in frequency, and healthwise, that isn't such a bad thing! We are now eating meat (chicken, lamb or beef) only once or twice a week, whereas many years ago, it was practically daily. Best, Alice

This was actually my fifth Pascha, but only my second as a Chrismated Orthodox Christian.
In 2012 I went by myself. In 2013 I went with my adult son. In 2014 we went as a family, and my wife told countless people (echoing the emissaries of Vladimir) "I thought I was in Heaven"
Keep in mind that while serving as a pastor of the Lutheran church I had celebrated the Western Easter Vigil every year, and, at the risk of the sin of pride, done it very well.
But the Western Easter Vigil is a mere appetizer compared with the Paschal Resurrection liturgy of the East.
Curious you should ask about observations, because there was discussion at Greek lamb roast this afternoon about the amount of time it took for a congregation of 200+ to light their candles one by one from the Priest or two Deacons. I said it didn't bother me, but in the haze of cigar smoke I did not elaborate.
Here is the elaboration: Simply to "pass the light" to the persons at the end of pew/row and have them in, turn, pass the light to others, is too much like a Western "Christmas Eve candlelight service". That is the method for lighting candles during the eighth ode at Lamentation; so, especially in a convert parish, those who found the Christmas Eve ritual comforting still have an opportunity to experience something akin to that during Holy Week without diminishing the candlelighting at Pascha.
Now, how is having the light swiftly passed during Pascha diminishing? What follows is very subjective, and comes from the perspective of my background. One of the most blessed moments for the clergy is to watch the sudden flaring up of the light of the Paschal candle as it ignites another wick, and, to see the look of peace, love, excitement, and joy in the eyes and on the faces of those who are standing before them. "This is the day of Resurrection, be illumined for the feast". As one who has held the Paschal candle: It is a moment that you wish could go on forever. So if it takes 10 - 15 minutes, it takes 10 - 15 minutes. Time seems suspended.
