In today's edition of the Youngstown Vindicator the newspaper had 2 photographs of the 50th anniversary of a visit by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. The bishop "drew 20,000 people to an outdoor Mass at St. Michael Byzantine Rite Catholic Church in Campbell July 22, 1956." There is a photo of "Bishop Sheen, wearing the vestments of a Byzantine prelate..." I know this topic has been discussed in the past, but I remember my father taking me there (I was 11), and if my memory is correct, during the homily it started to rain and as some in the crowd scrambled away for cover, the bishop made a comment about "ye of little faith." lol

This may be of some interest to this topic. It was posted today on CNA.

Everyone baptized into Christ should pass progressively through all the stages of Christ's own life, for in baptism he receives the power so to progress, and through the commandments he can discover and learn how to accomplish such progression. - Saint Gregory of Sinai

There is a picture of Archbishop Sheen celebrating the Byzantine Divine Liturgy in his autobiography "Treasure in Clay". The book itself is really a marvellous account of his spiritual pilgrimage.

My family and I have visited El Paso, IL twice. The first time was quite by accident (or providentially)! We were travelling home and happened to stop there to eat and drove around a bit and saw a sign by a shop indicating the birthplace of Archbishop Fulton Sheen! The second time was more deliberate - I went there to pray on our way back home, and then visited the Archbishop Fulton Sheen Information Center, which is only a few blocks from his birthplace in an old, renovated train depot that is also an art center. It was filled with Sheen paraphernalia from his shows and personal life. One woman was there who was the volunteer guide and she did a nice job explaining his his story.

A side note: I asked a former seminarian why St. Paul Seminary in Minnesota did not make more of the fact that one of its former students was up for canonization! He explained that Fulton Sheen had been kicked out of the seminary for rolling a bowling ball down the hallway of the dorm during final examss week!

Gotta love the humanity of the guy!

Fr Serge,

May your memory be eternal.

For others who may be interested, I had a similar question the other day when I found out the Bishop Sheen celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Melkite National Convention in Birmingham at the invitation of Archbishop Joesph Raya in the 1950s. I have found that there is a vinyl recording available in some libraries of Bishop Sheen reading and explaining portions of the Divine Liturgy. Interestingly enough, it was pressed by a label in Birmingham, Heart Recording. The listing at WorldCat is here [gatech.on.worldcat.org]

Quote

Kinonikon or hymn for holy communion. 6. Holy communion.
