As my forum name suggests, I am a Subdeacon...or at least I was. I was ordained a Subdeacon in the Antiochian Orthodox Church. I have since converted to the Catholic Church and am, of course, a Melkite. The question is, am I still a Subdeacon? Now I have asked my pastor and he doesn't know for sure because it's a minor order and is going to check into it but I thought I would bring it up here and see if anyone may know. I know there are clergy and very well informed lay people who frequent here. Also, I wasn't sure if this was the right place to post this since it's my very first post so if it's not please forgive me. In any case, I may need to change my forum name lol but I wanted to find out before I did.

Normally there is no problem with you remaining a Subdeacon. It is ultimately up to your Bishop, since you are in WVirginia, that would be Bishop Nicholas Samra, Eparchy of Newton. He's a wonderful pastor and very traditionally minded. Deacon Sabatino and his brother Subdeacon Sebastian are in the next state over from you, they may be able to assist you as well.
Bishop Nicholas can be reached at 617/323-9922 Deacon Sabatino at 703/504-8733

Thank you Michael . The parish I will be attending is in Columbus, Ohio. Holy Resurrection. I've been attending a local Latin parish for the past few months but I very much miss the Divine Liturgy so I'll be heading to Columbus this Sunday.

Welcome Subdeacon Matthew! We also live in WV & I was just wondering where you are located. We always attend the Divine Liturgy at Deacon Sabatino's parish (Holy Transfiguration in McLean, VA) when we are in VA visiting family. As Michael Thoma recommended, I think he would be an excellent resource for you to get in touch with. God bless!

Hi Zita! I live in Hurricane which is about 15 minutes outside of Charleston. The Latin parish I attend is in Nitro so I'll be splitting my time between Columbus and Nitro. My Latin priest/spiritual father and another friend who is also a Melkite speak *extremely* highly of Holy Transfiguration in VA. I was told Holy Week there is the best thing outside of Jerusalem. I hope to visit at some point but it's quite a drive..Columbus is only 2 and a half hours whereas Virginia is at least 6.

Hello again! I am familiar with Hurricane. We are in Morgantown at St. Mary's Holy Protection (Pittsburgh Eparchy). My brothers have attended Holy Week services at Holy Transfiguration & said it was an amazing experience. God bless!

Wonderful! Great news!
Our Malankara Syrian Catholic Family conference for 2015 will be taking place near you (relatively), in Virginia. Maybe you can stop in and assist in the Divine Liturgy!

The same thing happened to me when I went from OCA to UGCC. I was automatically accepted as a subdeacon by Bp Hlib here in the UK. Of course I had a letter from my former bishop attesting to my status as a subdeacon.

Have you since left the UGCC and returned to orthodoxy?

Subdeacon Matthew,
Christ is among us! He is and always shall be.
Did you transfer formally from the Melkites to the Romanian Catholics? I am just wondering (I took a glance at your profile).
Many years,
Paul

I did for a few months, but then returned as I didn't feel the same as when I was orthodox originally.
I am happily serving at a ugcc parish in Springfield, OR and a ruthenian parish in Portland.
