Hello all -
I am a third year philosophy student, and in order to complete my studies I must learn three distinct languages (it was a rule brought in by eccentric 'cultured' lecturers). Russian is the second one I've taken to study, and I figured I might as well touch up on my scripture and turn this into a catechetical opportunity as well.

Can anyone recommend a translation of the bible in Russian, or any prayer books or writings of the saints?

I don't know about Bible translations, but, if I were you, I would go to Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, NY, to check out their catalog of Russian-language prayerbooks and other spiritual literature.

I suggest you have a look at George Fedotov, The Russian Religious Mind. This two volume English set gives the lay of the land from the 10th to 15th century of all the major players and and overall schools of thought. From here you can then select the authors you want to read in the original Russian.

I have only read a little of a Protestant (gasp!) Bible in Russian. It seemed like a wooden translation of the KJV, which I prefer for English.
The Synodal translation of the Bible, which is an Orthodox translation and is used by other Christian groups in Russia, such as Catholics and Baptists. My wife has one and if I recall it seemed pretty solid, like a Russian RSV. Interestingly, I know that its OT is not a translation of the Septuagint but of the Hebrew scriptures.
