I have a question that's a bit different than usual, but hopefully some knowledgeable people can help.
In our rural area, an increase of ticks has become a problem, given that they carry Lyme disease.
How have monks, that have established their monasteries in wooded area, been dealing with the issue. Given that the black habits that are worn can make it easy for these insects to latch on? Is spraying the habit with bug spray an option?
Also, the same would apply to visiting priests wearing their inner and outer cassock.

I grew up at the edge of the Allegheny National Forest in PA. Some of the things we did were to spray ourselves with Deep Woods Off and carry a dryer sheet in a pocket--half hanging out--as well as pinning a dryer sheet to a shirt. Somehow a dryer sheet gives off some odor that all kinds of bugs dislike. Maybe a couple dryer sheets would help our brethren in remote areas.

When I lived downeast in Maine, we used to soak Old Woodsman on our bandannas to keep away black flies & noseeums. Don't know about ticks, but I would not want them to get into the habit!

I think the problem with ticks is that they do not really cause much pain. One has to examine oneself rather carefully because they can be riding on the body without much notice if one is not careful.
Ticks can be a problem anywhere, however. Our last summer had some of them in our yards. We were warned to wear long sleeves and long pants when doing yard work.

One has to examine oneself rather carefully because they can be riding on the body without much notice if one is not careful. VERY carefully indeed. Deer ticks....the one which carry Lyme disease...are very tiny, about the size of the head of a straight pin. Best to bathe or shower after working outside especially when in tall grass or weeds.
