Hello everyone! I'm hoping I can get some help on this forum as I don't know where else to go. I'm a Latin Catholic who has a big affinity for sacred art within the Eastern Christian tradition. I've been drawing icons for quite some time now and have been studying the techniques of egg tempura over this past year too. I want to give the actual painting a try, now that I have studied enough of it and have access to some classes online. I have two questions, one broad and one specific.

The broad one is for iconographers that potentially could be on this forum which is: Where do you get your information from? I've found various sites that analyze icons, but none that talk about technique, and the online classes are limited as well. Is there an online community that I am missing where I can ask for advice?

Another, also for iconographers, is a more specific one in case such a community doesn't exist: Where do you buy your pigments from? I've seen various people simply asset that any brand of pigment will do, but the only ones I have found to be universally considered reliable are quite expensive. I suppose this could be a sign of reverence towards the images but in the spirit of prudence, I would like to know my options.

God bless you all, have a great Advent/Nativity fast!

I would also like to ask for forgiveness for the embarrassing misspelling of “tempera” as “tempura” since there seems to be no edit button here. I have not been studying the delicious Japanese meal, but rather the beautiful painting technique!

D C,

Christ is in our midst!!

Please forgive me for not welcoming you to the forum. I was not laughing AT you, but WITH you about the tempura medium. Since I don't with paint or write icons, I though I was learning something new. I count a day wasted that I do not learn something new.

Bob
