Glory to Jesus Christ!

Hello, I'm new on here.
I have visited my local Ruthenian parish on and off for a few years. Before Lent I began attending their almost exclusively. After meeting with the pastor I found out that some Poles are actually Ruthenian. A few hours spent on genealogical research taught me that my great-grandfather was by his own admission a Ruthenian "Lemko" Pole. Since which Church you belong to follows your male heritage, I believe I should actually be Ruthenian.

Has anyone gone through this process? I don't know that you can call it switching Churches but more like recognizing that I am actually Ruthenian. Does it take the usual 1-3 years? Letters to bishops etc?

Thank you
FloridaPole

So, you are "nash". If no change in Church was done officially, you don't have to do anything. You could consult a canon lawyer if you wish, but these things are often discovered when a someone tries to join a religious order, or go into Holy Orders (mostly it is found they are canonically a part of one of the Eastern Churches and have to change if they wish to be Latin). Congratulations on discovering your the treasure of your family heritage! The only thing to watch for is that if you are married, this had to be done by a priest and not a deacon for it to be a valid marriage.

For all intents and purposes, I am Latin Rite. I thought it was where I belonged. I see that I probably should be Ruthenian.
It would be that quick? Just a letter or something to make it official?

Was it the great-grandfather on your mother or father's side? If there is an actual record that your paternal great-grandfather was Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic, and as long as your grandfather or father never became canonically Latin, then you'd be Byzantine, as I understand it.

But if he was actually Latin, or if your grandfather or father had actually changed Churches, then you would be Latin.

If the heritage is only on your mother's side, as I understand it, but your father's line was Latin, then one takes on the father's Church.

That all being said, I'm only going off my own understanding here, so hopefully folks with more knowledge than I have will respond.

Yes, this lineage is through my father. All male descendants, straight to me.

Now I do not have definitive proof that they were Byzantine, but I do that they were Ruthenian. That's where I think it will matter most. I hope to meet with the priest in the next week to discuss it with him.
