I'm looking for a good edition/translation of "The Apostolic Fathers", one that is hopefully fairly easy on the eyes and doesn't require a degree in anything, let alone theology, to read and understand. Any suggestions??

Thanks in advance!

I like the translation edited by Jack N. Sparks from Thomas Nelson & co in 1978. Very accessible english with in text scriptural references and a good index.

Thanks for the suggestion, Steve! That's certainly one I've looked at and considered, but given that I can't find a copy for a decent price (it's **over $60** on Amazon and everywhere else that I've found has a copy!!!), I may just have to give it a miss. If I could find a decent copy for $20 or less, then I'd give it some serious consideration.

I suggest “The Apostolic Fathers: A New Translation”(Lexham Classics) by Rick Brannan.

It came out in 2018. Amazon is selling it for $20. You might find a version for a little less on the used market.

Thanks, Devin! That's one I've been eyeing and seems to be a strong "contender". Is it safe to assume you've read it, as you're suggesting it? If so, are you able to compare it to any other translations out there?

J Michael,
I have read through the Apostolic Fathers twice or more. This first two times were many years ago and I cannot recall the translation(s).

Most recently, I read through a decent portion of Brannan's translation. It is advertised as a literal translation that is tighter to the underlying Greek, but at least for me, the translation reads pretty smoothly. I personally found the translator's notes to be really helpful. When Brannan's translation differs significantly from other translators, he provides notes on how the other translators rendered the passage. The notes will also clarify the occasional confusing passage.

So yes I do recommend it. If I am able, I will try to upload a few pictures of my book to give you a flavor of the text and the notes. It may not be for a day or two though.

Thanks for that, Devin! That'd be great if you could upload some pics. No rush---whenever you can get to it. I look forward to it.
