Tomorrow, Pope Francis will gather the Cardinals in a consistory. There are so many issues facing the Church right now and the Bishops gathered in Rome tomorrow are in a unique position to guide the Church through these tumultuous times. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will protect them and strengthen them in charity, truth, understanding and wisdom. And may they find joy and peace in this life and the life to come.

I'll add the intention that Pope Francis should focus on spirituality and keep his mouth shut about politics!

Pope is also the head of state of Vatican state. And that means, he can keep his mouth open about politics...

No disagreement there, he has every right to pronounce on all situations re: his moral authority. (The "head of state" thing is really a quaint anachronism).
But he also has a responsibility not to say things that upset not only EC's, but RC's as well.
If he can't, then, yes, he should keep his mouth shut.

Christ is in our midst!!
Alex,
We have a rule here that we do not make disparaging remarks about bishops and clergy. I don't care that you find Pope Francis' remarks that stray into political areas upsetting. Sometimes a bishop will do that as part of his prophetic role. In the future, please refrain from these types of comments.

Dear Bob,
I'm actually not upset by the pope's remarks - many others, including both EC and RC bishops and priests in Ukraine are. I just find them offensive. I apologize to you and this Forum for breaking the rules in this regard and withdraw my comments.

His Holiness the Pope has, in recent days, changed his tone for the better on these issues which is great. Many Years to His Holiness and may he fulfill his desire to visit war-torn Ukraine soon to encourage the suffering Church and people there!

Dear Bob,
Actually, I've reconsidered what you've said and I never intended to disparage the pope as such. Only his political remarks.
So unless you can show how even a pope's comments on politics are deserving of the same respect as his religious and spiritual pronouncements, I reiterate that he should stick to religion and keep his mouth shut about politics that are outside his competence.
You were out of line as a Moderator. Sorry. I will leave now.
