HYMN OF THE INCARNATION

PEOPLE: O Only-Begotten Son and Word of God, Who, being immortal, deigned for our salvation to become incarnate of the Holy Mother of God and ever-Virgin Mary, and became man without change. You were also crucified, O Christ, our God, and by death have trampled Death, being one of the Holy Trinity, glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit, save us.

LITTLE ENTRANCE

The priest and deacon make three bows, then a procession is formed and the deacon carries the Gospel Book around the Altar.

PRIEST (quietly): O Lord, our Master and God, Who in heaven established orders and armies of angels and archangels for the service of Your glory, make this our entrance to be an entrance of holy angels, serving together with us, and with us glorifying Your goodness. PRIEST (quietly): We thank You, O Lord God of Powers, for having deemed us worthy to stand, at this time, before Your holy Altar, and to prostrate ourselves before Your mercy, for our sins and for the people's transgressions. Accept our prayer, O God, and make us worthy to offer to You prayers and supplications, and unbloody sacrifices for all Your people, and enable us, whom You have placed in this Your ministry through the power of Your Holy Spirit, to call upon You at all times and in all places, without condemnation and blame, with a pure testimony of our conscience, that hearing us, You may be merciful to us according to the magnitude of Your goodness. SECOND PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

PRIEST (quietly): Again and again, we fall down before You and beseech You, O gracious Lover of mankind, that You hear our prayer and cleanse our souls and bodies of every defilement of flesh and spirit. Grant that we may stand before Your Holy Altar without blame and condemnation. Bestow, O God, also upon those who pray with us, advancement in faith and life and spiritual understanding. Grant that they who serve You in fear and love, may partake of Your Holy Mysteries without blame and condemnation, and be deemed worthy of Your heavenly kingdom. Prayer of the Cherubic Hymn

PRIEST (quietly): No one who is bound by carnal desires and pleasures is worthy to come to You, to approach You, or to minister to You, the King of glory, for to minister to You is great and awesome, even to the heavenly powers themselves. Yet, because of Your ineffable and boundless love for mankind, though in nature unchanged and unchangeable, You became man and were made our high priest and, as Master of all, gave Into our keeping the holy office of this liturgical and unbloody sacrifice. For You alone, O Lord our God, rule over all things in heaven and on earth, and are borne on the cherubic throne, and are the Lord of the Seraphim and King of Israel, Who alone are holy and dwell in the saints. Therefore, I beseech You, Who alone are gracious and ready to hear me; look favorably upon me, Your sinful and unprofitable servant, and cleanse my heart and soul of an evil conscience, and by power of Your Holy Spirit, enable me, clothed with the grace of the priesthood, to stand before this Your holy altar, and offer the sacrifice of Your sacred and most pure body and precious blood. Priest and deacon raise up their hands and quietly say the Cherubimic Hymn 3 times.

THE GREAT ENTRANCE

The deacon and priest go to the Table of Preparation, the priest incenses the holy gifts saying:

PRIEST: O God be merciful to me a sinner.

DEACON: Lift up, Father.

Placing the large veil on the deacon's left shoulder the priest says:
PRIEST: Lift up your hands to the holy things, and bless the Lord.

He takes the diskos and gives it to the deacon and taking the chalice himself they make the Great Entrance.

DEACON: May the Lord God remember in His kingdom all you Christians of the true faith, always, now and ever, and forever.

PRIEST: May the Lord God remember in His kingdom, Our Holy Father N. , the Pope of Rome, our most reverend Archbishop and Metropolitan N. , and our Bishop N. whom God loves, and the entire priestly, diaconal, and monastic order, our civil authorities, and all our armed forces, the noble and ever memorable founders and benefactors of this holy Church, and all you Christians of the true faith, always, now and ever, and forever.

PEOPLE: Amen. That we may welcome the King of all, invisibly escorted by angelic hosts. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Covering the holy gifts, the priest says:
PRIEST (quietly): The noble Joseph took down Your most pure body from the cross, wrapped it in a clean shroud, and with fragrant spices laid it in burial in a new tomb.

Incensing the holy gifts, he says:
PRIEST (quietly): In Your goodness, O Lord, show favor to Zion; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then You will be pleased with lawful sacrifice, burnt offerings wholly consumed; then You will be offered young bulls on Your Altar.

PRIEST: Remember me brother and fellow celebrant.

DEACON: May the Lord God remember your priesthood in His kingdom.

DEACON: The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you.

NICENE CREED
ALL: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten. Born of the Father before all ages. Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father, through whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, and was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and Mary the Virgin and became man. PREFACE

PRIEST: It is proper and just to sing hymns to You, to bless You, to praise You, to thank You, to worship You in every place of Your kingdom; for You are God ineffable inconceivable, invisible, incomprehensible, ever existing, yet ever the same, You, and Your only-begotten Son, and Your Holy Spirit; You brought us forth from non-existence into being, and raised us up again when we had fallen, and left nothing undone, until You brought us to heaven and bestowed upon us Your future kingdom. For all this we give thanks to You, and to Your only-begotten Son, and to Your Holy Spirit, for all that we know and that we do not know, the manifest and the hidden benefits bestowed upon us. We thank You also for this liturgy, which You have willed to accept from our hands, even though there stand before You thousands of archangels, tens of thousands of angels, Cherubim and Seraphim, six winged, many-eyed, soaring aloft on their wings.

PRIEST: Singing shouting, crying out and saying the triumphal hymn:

PEOPLE: Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Your glory, hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, hosanna in the highest.

ANAPHORA

PRIEST: With these blessed powers, O loving and kind Master, we too cry out and say: Holy are You and all holy, You, and Your only-begotten Son, and Your Holy Spirit; holy are You and all holy and magnificent is Your glory, who so loved Your world that You gave Your only begotten Son, that everyone who believes in Him should not perish, but should have life everlasting; Who, having come and having fulfilled the whole Divine plan concerning us, on the night when He was betrayed, or rather, when He surrendered Himself for the life of the world, He took bread into His holy and all pure and immaculate hands, gave thanks and blessed, sanctified, broke and gave it to His holy disciples and apostles, saying:

The deacon lifts the chalice and diskos up and makes the sign of the cross with them:

EPICLESIS

PRIEST: Moreover we offer to You this spiritual and unbloody sacrifice, and we implore and pray, and entreat You, send down Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts lying before us.

DEACON: Father, bless the holy bread.

PRIEST: And make this bread (+) the precious body of Your Christ.

DEACON: Father, bless the holy chalice.

PRIEST: And that which is in this chalice (+) the precious blood of your Christ.

PEOPLE: It is truly proper to glorify you, who have borne God, the ever-blessed and immaculate and the Mother of our God. More honorable than the Cherubim and beyond compare more glorious than the Seraphim, who, a Virgin, gave birth to God the Word, you, truly the Mother of God, we magnify.

PRIEST (quietly): For the holy prophet, precursor and Baptist John, for the holy glorious and illustrious apostles, for Saint N., whose memory we celebrate, and for all Your saints, through whose prayers, O God, visit us.

Remember also all who have departed in the hope of resurrection unto eternal life. And grant them rest where the light of Your face shines.

Moreover, we pray You, O Lord, remember the entire episcopate of the true believers, who faithfully dispense the word of Your truth, the entire priesthood, the diaconate in Christ, and all others in holy orders.

We further offer You this spiritual sacrifice for the whole world, for the holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, for those who live in chastity and venerable conduct; for our civil authorities and for all in the service of our country. Grant them, O Lord, a peaceful rule, that we also, sharing their tranquillity, may lead a tranquil and calm life in all piety and dignity.

PRIEST: Among the first, O Lord, remember our holy father N., the Pope of Rome, our most reverend Metropolitan N., our Bishop N . whom God loves, preserve them for Your holy churches, in peace, safety, honor, and health, for many years, as they faithfully dispense the word of Your truth.

The priest reverently breaks the Lamb into four parts and says:
PRIEST: Broken and distributed is the Lamb of God, broken yet not divided, ever eaten yet never consumed, but sanctifying those who partake thereof.

DEACON: Father, fill the holy chalice

The priest taking the IC particle, makes the Sign of the Cross with it over the chalice and placing it in it saying:
PRIEST: The fullness of the Holy Spirit.

The deacon presents the warm water saying:
DEACON: Father, bless the warm water.

The priest blesses it saying:
PRIEST: Blessed be the fervor of your saints, always, now and ever and forever. Amen.

The deacon pours it into the chalice in the form of a cross saying:
DEACON: The fervor of the faith, full of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRIEST: Deacon, approach!

DEACON: Father, give me the precious and holy body of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ.

PRIEST: The presious and holy and most pure body of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ is given to Deacon N., for the remission of his sins and for life everlasting.

Priest takes the Holy Eucharist, saying:
PRIEST: The precious and most holy body of Our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, is given to me, Priest N., for the remission of my sins and life everlasting. Amen.

ALL: O Lord, I believe and profess that You are truly Christ, the Son of the living God, Who came into the World to save sinners, of whom I am the first. The priest partakes of the Precious Blood and says:

He wipes his lips, and the edge of the chalice with the towel and says:
PRIEST: Behold, this has touched my lips, and shall take away my iniquities, and shall cleanse my sins.

PRIEST: Deacon approach!

DEACON: Behold, I approach the immortal king and our God. Give me, Father, the precious and holy blood of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ.

PRIEST: The servant of god, Deacon N., partakes of teh precious and holy blood of our Lord and god and Svior jesus Christ, for the remission of his sins and for life everlasting.

PRIEST: Behold, this has touched your lips, and shall take away your iniquities, and shall cleanse your sins.

The deacon takes the chalice, turns to people and elevates it saying:
DEACON: Approach with fear of God and faith.

Those going to communion go to the altar.
PEOPLE: Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord: God the Lord has revealed Himself to us.

Priest giving Communion to each says:
PRIEST: The servant of God N., partakes of the precious, most holy and most pure Body and Blood of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ for the remission of his (her) sins and for life everlasting. Amen.

While the priest gives Communion to the people the congregation sings an appropriate hymn. After all have received the priest blesses the people with the Holy Gifts saying:
PRIEST: Save Your people, O God, and bless Your inheritance.

PEOPLE: We have seen the true light, we have received the heavenly Spirit, we have found the true faith, and we worship the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us.

The priest places the Holy Gifts on the altar incensing them saying:
PRIEST (quietly): Be exalted, above the heavens, O God, and let Your glory be over all the earth.

Taking the Holy Gifts to the Table of Preparation he says:
PRIEST: Blessed is our God always, now and ever, and forever.

PEOPLE: Amen.

The priest goes to the Table of Preparation
PEOPLE: May our lips be filled with Your praise, O Lord, so that we may sing Your glory, for You have deemed us worthy to partake of Your holy, divine, immortal and life-creating mysteries. Keep us in Your holiness, so that all day long we may live according to your truth. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

DEACON: Having received the divine, holy, most pure, immortal, heavenly and life-giving, awesome mysteries of Christ, arise, let us worthily thank to the Lord.

DISMISSAL

I post this for those who have not attended or seen the reformed Liturgy, so everyone may form an informed opinion about the changes. I did not include every rubric involving position and placement of the the deacon and priest as these didn't change and aren't important for judging the recommended changes. (Plus I am typing this by hand!) The text is unofficial until promulgated, but it is what the seminary uses and we in the deacon program are being trained with.

After a quick scan of this I am very sad....

I appears to be substantially different from what is in use at the Melkite Church I currently attend.

Seems the Deacon's role has undergone some serious editing. And this section.....

Is very different, after the priest commemorates the bishops, the Deacon then commemorates the priests celebrating the Liturgy. Then the people respond with "Remember all men and women."

Can someone please explain this to me with a short explanation. I am a little confused. Is this new liturgy going to effect the Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Church? Are they going to take out the "we have found the True Faith" out of the liturgy?

I don't think there is any problem with a certain amount of horizontal inclusivity, like changing brethren to brothers and sisters or all men and women to all your people. Both these have been in use in the Metropolia for a while and are the only changes of this nature made to the Liturgy.

I think the changes are wonderful, especially, and I'm not sure if it is a new change, where the "PEOPLE" and not a chanter respond.

I have some more ideas for more changes for you if there is some internet synod I could forward them to.

Would this be called the Novus Ordo of St. John Chrysostom?

The problem that I see is that we are using a different translation than all the other Byzantine Catholic Churches. You should be able to walk into a Melkite Church, Ukrainian Church, or a Ruthenian Church and have the same translation.

None of the Byzantine Catholic Churches use the same English translation. The Melkites have theirs, the Ukrainians have three approved versions, and I have no idea what the Russians or Romanians use. The new Liturgy is attempting to do for our Metropolia what you want for everyone, one uniform usage for all Ruthenian parishes.

I agree with Joe Thur�s comments that the simple solution to the uniformity issue is to encourage our priests to follow the rubrics promulgated the Ordo Celebrationis over 50 years ago. Nothing else really needs to be done. We must always keep in mind, however, that the idea of uniformity is a Roman one. Byzantines always had local usages. This is partly the reason that the liturgy was so fluid until a very late date. My biggest problem with the rubrical changes is not so much that a particular priest may choose to take a particular prayer aloud but rather in the mandating such a revision of the liturgy which is not a restoration.

I have long suggested that the texts and rubrics of the Divine Liturgy be left alone until the Byzantine Church (both Catholic and Orthodox) can work together to develop a uniform English translation with accompanying rubrics that reflect an authentic Eastern mindset and the differing local traditions. I suggest that an international commission be created with representatives of all the Byzantine Churches with Bishop KALLISTOS and Archimandrate Robert Taft as the joint chairmen and including knowledgeable scholars, poets and musicians and that they be tasked with producing a complete English language text of our liturgy, menaion and all other liturgical texts.

Some selected initial comments on the text that Lance has posted:

DEACON: Father, give the blessing.

The original Greek and Slavonic is the equivalent of �Master, give the blessing.� The commentary I have read has always seemed to suggest that the term �Master� applies to God because it is God alone who blesses. Alternate explanations have suggested that the term �Master� applies to the bishop who is technically still considered to be the normative celebrant of the Divine Liturgy. Either way, it does not in any way translate to �Father� (meaning the priest).


The First, Second and Third Antiphons

What is the justification for mandating the taking of the Prayer of the First Antiphon aloud and those of the Second and Third Antiphons quietly?

Why is the Prayer of the First Antiphon considered more important than the prayers of the Second and Third Antiphons? This leads to the larger question about the specific criteria used to select what will be mandated to be taken aloud and what will be mandated to be taken silently.

What is the justification for mandating the antiphons to one verse? Currently the normative (if not actually celebrated) custom given in our liturgical books include several verses to better provide the symbol of the Office of the Three Antiphons.

Why are the litanies that tie together the Office of the Three Antiphons considered to be unimportant? What is the reasoning for their abolishment?


The Entrance with the Gospel

Why are the prayers of the Entrance deemed less worthy than the Prayer of the First Antiphon?

Why are these left silent? They are very beautiful prayers. Maybe someone will argue to do away with the texts of the antiphons altogether so that we may hear them taken aloud?

Why not omit the troparion and kontakion to make room for these prayers to be taken aloud? After all, they are an accretion to the liturgy from other Divine Services.


Prayer of the Thrice-Holy God

Why is this prayer deemed to be less important that it is mandated to be taken silently?


Prayer of the Gospel

Why is this prayer deemed to be less important that it is mandated to be taken silently?

Why is the dialogue with the deacon taken silently?


Post-Gospel Litanies

Why are the prayers of the Litany of Supplication considered unimportant and mandated to be taken silent?

Why are the prayers of the Faithful and the Cherubic Hymn considered less important than are others?

What are the criteria for these seemingly arbitrary revisions?

Are the Litanies of the Catechumens and the Faithful also gone for the normative text?


Prayer of the Offetory

This prayer is beautiful but why is it more important than others to be deemed worthy of being taken aloud? Among other things, it stops dead the action of the liturgy.


PEOPLE: Mercy, peace, the sacrifice of praise.

More literal but less understandable. How does this translation make this phrase more understandable to the faithful?


PEOPLE: It is proper and just.

The continuing portion �to worship the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, one in substance and undivided� is a valid Slavic development never found among the Greeks.

Why was it added and can we omit it with confidence that its addition was a mistake?

Why is the term �substance� still used when a more proper term is �essence�?


The Anaphora

Why are the prayers before and after the �Holy, Holy, Holy� considered more important than those?

Is the Epiclesis to be taken aloud or silently? Why?

Why are some of the concluding prayers of the anaphora taken aloud and others taken silently?

What is the criteria for these decisions?


Litany of Intercession

Why has this litany been shortened? How many thousand years does it need to be taken before it is considered to be a valid part of the liturgy by some?

What is the justification of combining the three petitions into one?

These are just some of the problems that quickly come to mind. I do not wish to be sarcastic but I prayerfully believe that the liturgy is not in need of revision. There appears to be no criteria for these revisions.

I will note that there appears to be differences between the text posted by Lance and copies I have seen previously. The one he posted seems to be the current text and reflecting only the rubrical changes. In those I have seen the inclusive language is annoying. �Lover of Mankind� has apparently been changed to �who loves us all�.

Lance, can you post the source of your text and whether it is really official?

The text is a compilation from: the booklet used at the seminary, the booklet from the 75th anniversary Liturgy, the booklet from Metropolitan Basil's enthronement, the rubrical instructions given to me at the deacon program, and the 1965 Liturgicon. So it is unoffical but fairly close to the official version, if not the exact text.

As to why some prayers were left silent and others taken aloud, given the time this text spent at Rome being poured over by liturgical scholars and the fact it got its final approval from Archimandrite Taft, I can only assume the changes were considered correct after comparison with the manuscripts and within the tradition of the Byzantine Church.

To me, the promulgated changes butcher the liturgy and to quote an earlier poster..make it no other than the Novus Ordo of St. John Chrysostom.

Or better yet THE NEW DIVINE LITURGY OF OUR FATHER AMONG THE SAINTS, ANDREW OF PASSAIC smile

I don�t think the text you posted is identical to the one used at the 75th (I don�t remember the use of �mercy, peace, the sacrifice of praise�). Now that you mention Rome, it is my understanding that Rome did reject the revision of the normative rubrics of the liturgy in contrast to the traditional rubrics but did allow for the bishops to make local adaptations (i.e., keep the books and the rubrics the same but you can make local changes). If it is the exact text, it is quite different from the originally proposed one. But only those directly involved know the whole story. I would have to see the response provided by Rome before stating that Taft or anyone on the commission agrees with the revision of our inheritance.
