Good Morning,
I recently got a set of prayer beads smile . Besides the Jesus prayer, I sometimes say, "Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ, King of Endless Glory." Or, "In Him, I live and move and have my being", which I believe St. Paul wrote. I also have posted similar short prayers near my crucifix to remind me to pray more. Does anybody else say other prayers with your beads?

Dear Wolfgang,

Are these beads a rosary or how are they constructed (I'm interested in these things)?

Historically, there were prayer beads, knotted cords, markers on staffs and what would today be called a "cribbage board" where one put pieces of wood into holes etc.

In addition to forms of the Jesus Prayer, the Fathers of the Desert prayed: "O God come to my assistance; O Lord make haste to help me!"

The practice of reciting the Our Father 150 times as a psalter substitute developed and then the Hail Mary 150 times - something that persists to this day on Mt Athos as well. St Seraphim of Sarov urged this practice.

The saying of many "Pater Nosters" on beads led to the development of the phrase "pitter patter."

As a psalter substitute, one could memorize one psalm, such as Psalm 23, and recite this 150 times.

Hi Alex,
I do have a rosary and am even beginning to say the Eastern Rosary.
My new prayer beads are a set of 33 beads connected by red thread. I think it is also called a "Chotki". Pax Christi, Wolfgang

Dear Wolfgang,

Excellent - the term "Chotki" or "Chetki" mean "knots" from the knots on the cord.

They are made with nine turns of the spindle - the devil could not break knots made with nine turns.

I am wondering where to find them with actual knots, not beads. I don't want the beads - actually, I already have beads. I have heard that some woolen chotkis are available, but can't find a source. Of course, Byzantine bookstores are non-existent here.

I sometimes use a combo of the Jesus Prayer and the Trisagion. I use a set of Anglican beads I got a few years ago. http://www.kingofpeace.org/prayerbeads.htm

I have a prayer rope I recently ordered from a convent: http://users.sisqtel.net/cse/Prayrope.htm

There are also twine Rosaries, you can get a free one at: http://rosaryarmy.com/

Not only can you get a free twine rosary from Rosaryarmy.com [rosaryarmy.com] , they also have instructions on making twine knotted rosaries here. [rosaryarmy.com]

I bet you could adapt those instructions to make knotted chotkis, if you feel like taking up a new hobby wink

Thanks, Anhelyna. I have wooden beads, but I suspect the woolen ropes will get less damage from being in my pocket.

Dear Charles,

Next time I go to the monastery, or see one, (which I often do at Orthodox church bookstores) I will send you a woolen chotki ( 'komboskini' in Greek...now say that 12 times in a row! LOL!) if you would like.

What is really wonderful about them is that each knot has been prayerfully made by a monastic and thus, when you wear it, it gives you a wonderful sense of peace.

However, please note that when they are used alot, they do streeeeetch out!

In Christ,
Alice

Thanks, Alice. When you do, send me the name and address of the monastery so I can send them a small donation. Our monastics deserve our support for all they do.

Dear Friends,

If anyone would like beautiful cord rosaries in various colours of cord, the Confraternity of Our Lady Star of the Sea offers them at $2 dollars for one (best deal in any town!), plus shipping and handling.

Their address is:

Confraternity of Our Lady Star of the Sea
P.O. Box 609
Morgan City, Louisiana
70381

I put in an order for several every few months to give away - you'll never leave home without it, once you have it in your hands!

***Alex, is there any relation betweeen 'chotki' and the Slavic words for 'to count' or 'an account'? (Russian 'schjot' = check or account (noun) and schitat' = to count; please forgive my using Russian and also the Latin characters wink )

Dear Jason,

Indeed there is!

In English as well, there are words that derive from the rosary beads - the term "bead" comes from "bede" or the old English word for "to pray" or "beg."
