I found out tonight that my paper on Iconography has been accepted to present at an academic conference in San Antonio in November. biggrin

This work examines how icons serve to communicate faith and tradition among Eastern Christians (both Catholic and Orthodox) in contemporary South Carolina. As a recent convert, the project was also a great learning experience for me.

If anyone wants to see or discuss my work, now or in person when I get out there, let me know.

Also, if anyone is in the area and has a guest room, so this single parent/starving graduate student can stay for free for a couple of days, please let me know.

CONGRATULATIONS EARL!

One thing to be sure of, is God has already gone before you and made the way. Totally cool!

You are in the Church with Christina (maiden name was LaRussa) and her hubby.

Yep, they're in our small Melkite community in Charleston. As a matter of fact, she participated by providing a personal narrative for the project.

Congratulations!

I'm interested in reading your paper. I tried the link on your blogspot, but it did not work.

Are you familiar with Anton Vrame's The Educating Icon: Principles of Iconic Catechesis in the Orthodox Tradition. It is his doctoral dissertation from Boston College that is available here:

Dissertation [escholarship.bc.edu]

...or in book format through Holy Cross Orthodox Press:

The Educating Icon [amazon.com]

It really is a masterpiece of scholarly reflections on the role of iconic catechesis in forming the minds and hearts of the faithful.

Anyway, I just thought I'd mention it given your area of interest. I look forward to reading your paper as well!

Congrat's again!

I think I used Vrame in my paper. If not, it's definitely worth a look.

Email me direct at earlcapps@webstop.net and I'll send you a copy of the paper.
