Recently while praying Ive found that I cover my face with my hands or shield my eyes a lot, is this is a common occurrence? Do the Church Fathers mention this at all?
Good bless,
Odo
Abba Isidore the Priest: When I was younger and remained in my cell I set no limit to prayer; the night was for me as much the time of prayer as the day. (p. 97, Isidore 4)

Hey,
It's common allright. I do that sometimes. It helps me block out the world to focus on my prayers and mediation to God.
Pope John Paul II does it a lot, right Alex?

Yep I do it too, mostly when I am praying earnestly for God to do something that I really want done (like reuniting the Orthodox and Catholic Churches) or when I am asking forgiveness about something I feel especially horrible about. But most of the time when I "shield my face" my hands are in the "prayer position" if you know what I mean, and they are covering my nose and mouth.

Slava Jesu Kristu,
I do it also in moments of my most intense prayer. I find it comforting especially if the subject matter is grave.

Dear SPDundas, Yes, the Pope does, by George! The monastic hood has very much the same effect in that it helps one block out the immediate environment and focus on God in prayer. It is always good to have a darkened room for prayer. The Ethiopians often drape their prayer shawls over themselves when they are in intense prayer. This shows how certain outward forms can help with prayer, lighted candles, a room apart, icons, a shawl or something like that, prayer beads or rope, incense sticks, what have you. And the Holy Spirit will teach us along the way. Let us become flexible in His Hands and He will bring us into true Communion with Him and the Father with His Son. Alex

Cardinal McCarrick has told a story from his days as Archbishop of Newark. The Pope came to visit, back in the 1980s I think, and after mass, the entourage was supposed to travel on a tight schedule to some other event. The Archbishop and the Pope were walking in the Cathedral and passed a side chapel. The Pope went to his knees and was lost to the world for about 15 minutes. I suppose the folks at the next event were rewarded for their patience. Have a Blessed Day !!! John Pilgrim and Odd Duck

Dear Friend,
Yes, both Ethiopian Catholics and Orthodox use prayer shawls and these can often be ordered online at the various Ethiopian markets on the internet.
Perhaps you might have an Ethiopian Church or market in your community - these would have them.
My local store used to have them and I've gotten them for members of my Internet Forum Family here before - I'll keep an eye out for one for you.
Alex

Glory to Jesus Christ! Dear John, I think the shawls are the same whether Jewish or Christian. The Ethiopian branch of Christianity is very old tabernacle focused. As for my website it is http://YourCatholic.com it is a Catholic Portal and Forum for all rites. I will be happy to see you visit. God Bless! IC XC NIKA, -Nik! "That website guy"
