This past week, I wrote my first Icon. The Icon is of The Holy Napkin, or the Image not made by human hands.
The Teacher of the class was Daniel Nichols (iconophile).
I really enjoyed the class. The entire week writing the icon was spiritually edifying.
Praise God!

From the site [ eighthdayicons.com] of Iconographer Daniel Nichols: I am a Byzantine Catholic iconographer living in northern Ohio. I am married to Michelle and father to Luke, Patric, Joseph, Maria, and Michael. Before I began painting icons, I studied Byzantine, Russian and western Romanesque iconography and created works in various media under these influences. I was taught iconographic technique by Bob Wiesner, who was taught by Phil Zimmerman, who was taught by Bishop JOB, the Orthodox bishop of Chicago (OCA). My iconographic style - and most of my patterns- come from the Russian tradition.

Laka, I just went to his website myself. I met Daniel and his family at DL today - St. Nicholas in Barberton. I recognize his children.

CRW,
Yes he does!
Speaking of which, I go to St. Joseph's Melkite Church in Akron, Ohio. Ever been there for Divine Liturgy?

Once, long ago I visited St. Joseph Melkite. Beautiful interior. I hope my teaching schedule in the Fall permits me to attend the morning office at St. J.

Dear Laka,
Say hello to our great Iconophile, Daniel, for us all!
Especially for me!
When we first met on the forum he wanted to give me the "brush off," but we since became great friends!
Congratulations and remember that really good iconographers are sometimes considered for sainthood!
Cheers,
Alex

Thanks for the info. I will have a look at the web pages. I am glad the teacher is someone connected with the Church. There are too many "ex-Soviet" artists around thinking they can call themselves iconographers just to earn some money when their secular paintings fail to sell.
Did you teacher give you a copy of the iconographer's prayer: An iconographer begins with a special prayer to the Holy Spirit to direct her or his hands:
O Divine Lord of all that exists, You have illumined the Apostle and Evangelist Luke with your Holy Spirit, thereby enabling him to represent your most Holy Mother, the one who held You in her arms and said: The grace of Him who has been born of me is spread throughout the World.
Enlighten and direct my soul, my heart and my spirit. Guide the hands of thine unworthy servant So that I may worthily and perfectly portray thine icon, That of thy Mother and all the saints, For the glory, joy and adornment of thy Holy Church.
Forgive my sins And the sins of those who will venerate these icons And who, kneeling devoutly before them, Give homage to those they represent. Protect them from all evil And instruct them with good counsel.
This I ask Through the intercession of they Most Holy Mother, And the Apostle Luke And all the saints.
Amen.

Yes. I prayed this prayer every morning before I began writing the Icon, in addition to my morning prayers. I also prayed: O Lord grant me a pure heart and steady hand.
