According to Bishop John Elya, retired bishop of the Eparchy of Newton, they can! Read about it at : http://www.melkite.org/Questions/W-4.htm

Thanks!
I have no problem with indulgences attached to prayers, but where I start to question them is when they are given out, for example, to people who go to World Youth Day. I don't get how that can be deserving of an indulgence.

Drewmeister,
Indulgences have traditionally be attached to Prayer, Good Works and Almsgiving.
Included in the category of Prayer is the pious Pilgrimage, of which the Church, in Her Wisdom, has declared WYD to be.

Indulgences can be justified, but by faith alone.

Stephen I somewhat agree.I see that slavation is a free gift of God, and not of works, lest anyone should boast (Ephesians 2:8,9). when I hear of indulgences, I see a red flag. it was John Tetzel's peddling of indulgences that was the last straw and led to the Reformation. yes, it was a host of many things over the centuries, but the problem with indulgences tossed a barrel of napalm on a smouldering fire. I ignore indulgences, and look to the finished work on the Cross for my salvation. Much Love, Jonn

Before we talk about indulgences we should do some homework. I recommend reading INDULGENTIARUM DOCTRINA Apostolic Constitution On Indulgences Pope Paul VI, January 1, 1967: http://www.ewtn.com/library/PAPALDOC/P6INDULG.HTM The basic truth is valid for all of the West and of the East, but there is difference in the application of particulars.

There is a Plenary indulgance attached to the reception of Holy Communion according to my upbringing in the R.C. Crurch.
It's for free.
I believe it is corrrect but have never tried to put it on my Byzantine parishoners from another culture, who accepted the Irish families willingly in the late 60"s and early 70"s into their churches.
An Our Father, Mail Mary, Glory Be, Prayer before the Crucifix and Hail Holy Queen for the intentions of the Holy Father are the qualifications, I belive.
