Good Evening Brothers and Sisters,

I've read through all your messages on the homosexual thread (yes, all FOUR pages) looking for an answer to a simple question, but didn't find it. Being new to the BC and in light of all the media attention on the sexual scandals of our priests, I noticed the news reports are identifying all the priests as Roman Catholic.

My question is ... have there ever been such scandals in the BC also? either in the present or the past?

Thank you all in advance.
Loretta

Thank you Stushu, but this still doesn't answer my question. Lately in the media there have been many media stories (new and old ones being dredged up) concerning sexual misconduct on the part of ROMAN Catholic priests. I'm not questioning the causes or psychological root of these deeds.

In these news reports there is no mention as to Byzantine Catholics or Orthodox (not that they were involved in these current scandals) ... only Roman Catholics and what I was wondering was whether this was primarily an attack on the celibacy of the Roman rite. (and Yes, I know the questions/answers behind that type of reasoning.)

Obviously a lot of religious communities have their own moral problems, but what I asking in particular was "Was there was ever specific media coverage of a moral breakdown within the Byzantine or Orthodox communities."

Thanks again, Stushu. Looks like I'll have to file this one under "unanswered questions".

Dear Friend,

Yes, there have been such scandals in Eastern Catholic and Orthodox monastic communities, involving individuals.

Perhaps it is because the RC Church is so large that the scandals appear more widespread or out of proportion.

Check the Cleveland Plain-Dealer about 10 years ago...

Most media coverage our Church ever got in the history of the USA! Almost ruined the whole Parma Eparchy.

As sad as this is, it's nothing new. St. John Chrysostome complained about the clergy keeping little boys and girls as sex toys. It just proves that human nature doesn't change. You would think, however, that our screening process should!
