Is there a customary set of prayers when visiting a cemetery?
Tomorrow, I'm taking my two small boys to visit their father's grave for the first time since his funeral. I've been a few times, and I know this is going to be very hard for me. I think the only way I'll get through this (without traumatizing the boys with the depth of my own grief) is if I can have a set ritual to fall back on when my own words fail me.
Should I just do as much of the Trisaghion prayers as I can? Any suggestions would be welcome.

If you happen to have the Rituale Romanum, I'm sure you can find some lovely prayers for the dead. I don't know what the Eastern equivalent would be.
Perhaps you could locate some parts of prayers for the dead said at the Divine Liturgy.

May I make a suggestion since you are taking the little ones, this may seem a little odd, but here goes... This is actually used for the memorials but I think maybe the fact that you are helping children to understand, this might help. At the memorial we have kolyva(Arabic form of boiled wheat - I will put a recipe below), make some boiled wheat and take it to the graveyard. Share some with each other, you may ask father to bless it, and then place some on the ground over the grave. I found an explanation by our own dear Alex about the wheat and why we have it. But, it may help you and the kids go through this easier and make it something very special for all three of you and maybe just maybe a little easier. Don't know if this is kosher or not, but I don't know why it wouldn't be. So you could do your praying while you are preparing the wheat with the children and talk about the meaning of the wheat, then when you go to the graveside, it will much easier for all of you. The constant ingredients seem to be boiled wheat (of course!) and sugar. Other common ingredients are nuts, raisons, or pomegranate seeds, parsley, and other spices. Certainly, this is not a comprehensive list! Kolyva is made from only three ingredients: boiled wheat, ground nuts and sugar. Boil two cups of wheat berries till they burst. Drain and grind/chop coarsely. Toast enough nuts to make two cups ground. Walnuts are traditional. I like the flavor of pecans. Almonds and, for a delightful flavor, pistachios are both grown in the Holy Land. Take two cups sugar and caramelize to a very pale gold and stir in the chopped nuts to make a nut brittle. Grind to a coarse praline powder. Mix the praline with the wheat and pack into a Saran lined hemispherical type bowl. Cover the top with Saran and refrigerate. This will keep for a few days. Remove Saran, invert onto a large plate, unmold and remove Saran. Decorate with Sultanas or Jordan Almonds to form a cross on the half dome. Ready to bless and serve. Penthaetria, I'm not sure that, with all else going on, that you will have time to make kolyva (or ameh) this time, don't stress over it if you don't. You don't mention how old the boys are, but I think you may want to speak with them on the way to the cemetery about the meaning of the prayers you will recite, particularly if they are too young to easily understand them or aren't really themselves familiar with them. I can't offer a lot of suggestions for you, other than what you yourself have already suggested. What little I can ... O God of all spirits and of all flesh, who has destroyed death, overcome the devil, and given life to the world: grant O Lord, to the soul of Your servant, our beloved Daddy, who has left this life, that he may rest in a place of light, in a place of happiness, in a place of peace, where there is no pain, no grief, no sighing.

Thank you for your prayers this day. There aren't words to talk about it, but I felt connected to all the people I knew were praying for us. The Akathist prayers are particularly beautiful, Diak; I think they will find their way into my personal prayer time... Again, thank you. Thank you, Pentha Tria, for starting this thread, and to all of you who have contributed. I am also benefitting from the prayer suggestions (in remembering my son).
Of course, an easy and simple prayer is the Trisagion for the Dead (it can be found on the net at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese site, among others), for those of Greek (which I think includes Melkites/Antiochians) usage.

Chesnokov took a verse from psalm 74(?) and made a magnificent communion anthem, but I think its very meaningful in a number of ways for a family at graveside:

I was 12 when my Dad died, after being very ill for almost a year. Since I didn't know any other kids whose Dad had died, in typical pre-teen fashion, I was very self-conscious about it and afraid that people would feel sorry for me - which probably would have caused me to cry, something I was sure no self-respecting 12 year old should do. I avoided any reference to Dad; in retrospect, I wish that anyone had told me that it was okay to mention his name or speak aloud of him. My Mom was wonderful, but she didn't have a lot of spare time to chit-chat. Raising my sister and me as a single parent and thrown back into the working world to support us, I suspect that she was grateful that I adjusted so well to what had happened; little knowing how unadjusted I was. It was many years later before I was able to comfortably speak about my Dad. May his memory be eternal and blessed. You, the boys, and their Daddy will be in my prayers throughout the holidays.
