dear Donna:
re prayer books: I would recommend the Holy Trinity Prayer Book (published by Holy Trinity Monastery, Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, at Jordanville, N.Y.)
recently the Toronto Eparchy of the UGCC put out a very nice little pocket sized prayer book with lots of good stuff in it. Unfortunately it has a fatal flaw - it includes the Rosary (which while a beautiful prayer and devotion of Latin Catholicism, is not an authentic part of the Orthodoxy in Communion with Rome [it was included I am sure as a political move to console the Latinized {"2 steps forward and 1 step back" to paraphrase}]) - so, while I understand the political necessity given the context, I can't recommend it.
Otherwise any prayer book produced by any of the Orthodox Churches would be fine.
As far as the Catechism, if you are asking for my opinion, yes the official title is "Catechism of the Catholic Church"; but in my opinion it is Not the Catechism of the "Catholic Communion" or of the "Catholic ChurchES".
In other words, I find that it basically ignores the existence of the Eastern Catholic Churches.
E.g. in the index it has "Deism" but no "deification"; it has "divination" but no "divinization", "theology" but no "theosis". It's structure is based on the "Apostles Creed" not the Nicean Creed, etc. etc.
So Bottom line, not a good place to learn about the Eastern Catholic churches (if that is what you are after) - as it is de facto as you say, a Catechism for the Roman Catholic Church. (so a very good place, naturally, to learn the teachings of the Latin Catholic Church.)
However I would recommend any book by Archbishop Elias Zogbhy, emeritus Hierarch of Baalbek and Council Father at Vatican II.
You would probably enjoy the books of Frederica Matthewes-Green (wife of an Antiochian Orthodox Priest) - very home, informative, and funny. And not at all anti-Catholic or polemic.
enjoy!

There are aspects I admire in both Rites, but now that I've experienced the Divine Liturgy, I must admit, there's no turning back!
Your little friend in Jesus, Donna Personally, I love the Catechism....my copy is nearly worn out.....but then, I am not using it for a textbook to learn about Eastern Catholicism. A concern about using a lot of Orthodox literature to learn about Byzantine Catholicism is that you may not pick up subtle differences between the opinions and teachings of those who are in communion with Rome, and those who are not....personally, I'd think you might want to start by reading books recommended by the priest at the parish where you are going.....maybe the Church Fathers, some more modern Byzantine writings, and some Vatican documents explaining the relationship of the Eastern and Western Churches.... ....just some thoughts Unity In Christ
Let us pray for Unity In Christ!

You can get these from Eastern Christian Publications, www.ecpubs.com [ecpubs.com] or from Icon and Book Service, www.iconbook.org [iconbook.org] Thanks so much for this information-- I just ordered the 3-part Catechism from Icon and Book Service (and "met" the kindest monk over the phone who assured me of his prayers for my family as we seek God's will in these matters)... I so look forward to receiving my books! --Donna ><>
