Good afternoon,

I know many of you on this board are very intune to the byzantine catholic community here.

Do any of you know where I can order a ruthenian divine liturgy CD preferably in slavonic? I have searched several places on the internet, but I didn't get very good results.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

There are no still-available CDs or cassettes of Ruthenian Catholic Divine Liturgy from the United States, in Slavonic, using the prostopinije (plainchant) native to our tradition. The best recordings of that were actually on LPs, e.g., "Sluz~ba Boz~ija" by the Carpatho-Russian Choir of Passaic, NJ directed by the late Michael P. Hilko.

If you want prostopinije, a cassette recording that is part harmonized prostopinije, part choral arrangements, is from the Orthodox Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky in Presov, Slovakia. Here you also will find the correct, traditional Rusyn pronunciation of Church Slavonic -- not the Slovak/Ukrainianized pronunciation that's been imposed most places here in the U.S.

If you don't need prostopinije, then the Holy Ghost Choir of Philadelphia, PA has some beautiful recordings of the Liturgy:

Their old cassette, "Divine Liturgy in Old Slavonic" is a classic, and they have a newer VHS videotape of the Liturgy in Slavonic, as well.

The Parma Diocesan/Eparchial Choir made a lovely CD in the mid-1990s of the Liturgy in Slavonic, "Slavonic Liturgical Traditions," but I am not sure it's still available. It doesn't seem to be on the Web anywhere.

Giovanni,

I have a few audio cassettes of the Divine Liturgy with portions in Slavonic that I would be happy to duplicate and share with you. Contact me if you are interested.
