I am very sad and embarrassed to say, that although I was born a Byzantine, I never learned very much about the traditions. My parents brought me to church every Sunday, but sent me to a Roman Catholic school. Therefore, I know the songs and prayers for the divine litergy very well, but I cannot explain the meaning or significance behind anything. My in-laws are Roman Catholic, and ask me many questions about the Byzantine Rite, but I can answer VERY few.
I want, so much, to understand the Byzantine Rite. I even went on the pilgrimage to the Ukraine for the 300yr anniversary 2 or 3 years ago. I had hoped to understand a little better, but I still feel in the dark.
I thought about talking to our pastor about this, but I am very embarrassed that after going to the same church for 29yrs, I know very little about it. My grandparents, on both sides of the family, were one of the founders of our church. They would be so disappointed in me if the were still with us!
If anyone can suggest where I can get some simple to read/understand information starting with the basics, I would greatly appreciate the info. I am also interested in the terminology of the different furnishings(for lack of a better term) in the church, along with their significance.
Thank you in advance for any help anyone can offer.
