LEADING CARDINAL SAYS POPE IN 'LAST DAYS' Thu Oct 2,11:19 AM ET
By VICTOR L. SIMPSON, Associated Press Writer
VATICAN CITY - A leading European cardinal said Thursday that Pope John Paul II is nearing "the last days and months of his life," the latest prelate to express alarm over the 83-year-old pontiff's health.
...
"The entire world is experiencing a pope who is sick, who is disabled and who is dying I don't know how near death he is who is approaching the last days and months of his life," Schoenborn told Austrian state broadcaster ORF.
The cardinal's spokesman, Erich Leitenberger, later told The Associated Press that the comments were "to be interpreted philosophically."
Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz, who has been the pope's secretary since John Paul was a cardinal in Poland, made a rare statement to reporters Thursday while the pontiff was meeting with the president of Lithuania.
Asked about the pope's health, Dziwisz referred to comments attributed by a German magazine to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger that John Paul was "in a bad way" and that the faithful should pray for him.
"Cardinal Ratzinger was crying yesterday, explaining that he never gave an interview but merely answered someone he met on the street saying, 'If the pope is sick, pray for him,'" Dziwisz said.
"Many journalists who in the past have written about the pope's health are already in heaven," Dziwisz said.

For someone who's on death's doorstep he sure keeps a busy schedule.

I would guess that after the Holy Father passes away into eternal life we will see the swiftest beatification (rivaling that of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta) of the 21st century. He must rank up there with Pope Saint Pius X. Silouan, monk

Saw the holy man himself on TV just yesterday. Looked great! Spoke to the flock! Flew in helicopter! Many years to him!

In sober fact, we are all near death, and should live with an awareness of this, striving to prepare ourselves to meet the Lord. Incognitus

Who can say if someone is near death?Only God can. In reality we could all be "near death" at this very moment.

Pray for the John Paul II, Roman Pontiff, Patriarch of the West, Successor of St. Peter, and Bishop of Rome that the Lord will guide him through this important time in his Papacy, and many years to His Holiness

Some people just don't get it. God TAKES care of EVERYTHING. That includes His Holy Church...most specifically because she is His Bride.
So why worry if the pope is going to be out of mind or something? It's NOT going to happen...
Why? Because Jesus is the HEAD of the Catholic Church. And the Pope is only the earthly head of the Church.
SO...if it's the pope's time to go...then God Himself will see to it...If God says it's time to go then it's time to go.
So...let's TRUST in God....TRUST in Jesus. Everything is in His Hands.
Does that make sense?

I saw a priest last night on CNN - part of a show about the Pope - who said that JP2 spent the past 25 years showing us, by example, how we should live, and now he is showing us, by example, how we should die. The priest opined that JP2's best lessons may still be ahead of him. I thought that was an interesting point since so many current moral issues revolve around how one sees life and death - abortion, "euthanasia," capital punishment - and seeing JP2 face his twilight years with dignity and determination teaches something beautiful.
I don't have a mental picture of any pope but JP2 - I'm sure that is true of a lot of people my age and younger. (Paul VI and John Paul I died when I was a kid and I was only vaguely aware of them.)

Dear Annie, And I've started a prayer group on the prayer thread for the Pope. I hope you will join! ( I don't get any 'kick-backs' for promoting it - just, hopefully, spiritual ones! ) Alex
